Bubbling under the windscreen.

Im sure we have been here before on this subject, and I was sure that there was a technical artical on it, but I cant seem to find one covered in the 993 section. Anyway ive been to have mine evaluated today and they are going to email me the quote. I cant leave it any longer, it seems to be getting worse by the month.
I know its a glass out job, but are there any other bits of info I might need regarding the work. Id be interested to know all your experiences regarding this job most 993 owners have to go through. Thankyou fellas.

Just had mine done by Tony at GTR motorsport, he came highly recommended and has done a top very high quality job, no hesitation in recommending him. I waited until my windscreen had a chip and then claimed the cost of a new screen and the removal fitting from my ins company, had to pay £100 as I used a nominated fitter (GTR) but this saved a fair bit on the removal / refit and I now have a lovely new screen as well as no more bubbles.

Tony and GTR are on 07980874690, they are at sindlesham reading (just off the motorway next to winnersh triangle) I travelled to Tony from Cheltenham as I only wanted my "baby" worked on by someone who knows what they are doing.

No affilliation just a happy customer

John, if you had a GT3 of course you wouldn't be having these problems (but I do love that car of yours...)

I had mine done a while ago - no major dramas, but it's important to make sure the windscreen fitters know what they are doing. Like a previous answer I waited until the screen needed replacing due to a stone chip. Unfortunately the insurance company refused to allow a nominated fitter so I carried the whole cost and used a specialist. Excellent job and very pleased, if expensive.

Two months later I picked up a crack from a stone on the motorway. Can you guess the outcome of this one? Used the insurance company's firm this time, and we're now on the 3rd go around as they can't fit the new screen correctly. So far we've had the trim collapsed into the gap between screen and frame, trim packed out with (moisture retaining!) cord and damaged paintwork. Caveat emptor...

Thanks for the reply's so far chaps, are there any more story's or info, there must be some more out there.

I had a little that Tony at GTR did - he was very good and those guys really know their way around the car. Can't stress enough that it needs doing early or the price will rise!

The one other outfit I have used is Specialised in Reading. This outfit is also super-professional (will cost a little more). Karl knows just about everything on 993's when it comes to trouble areas and definitely worth getting his opinion although the quote will come out a little higher I think it is worth it!

I had some front wing (near screen) work done and the paintwork matches perfectly (Polar Silver)...

I had a rough Guestimate on Monday at a local specialist, depending on the level of damage done.
Price ranged from £1,500.00 to £2,500.00. He is good, but I still felt a bit shocked.
This is without the cost of replacing the glass.
What do you chaps think.

Neil,

£1,500 to £2,500? Sounds very expensive to me. I'm sure you are, but phone around the specialists for competitive quotes. If you're in the Surrey area, try Premier Panel Skills (http://www.premierpanelskills.co.uk/). They did a very good job on mine and Ian the owner is a Porsche fan and driver. No affiliation, etc. etc, you know how it goes.

Cheers/John

Can you post some pictures so we can see the extent of the problem.

I have had some bubbling on mine which I noticed about 3 years ago and injected Dinatrol all around under the surrounding seal and renew this every 12 months or so.

This has stopped it from getting worse and is not noticable unless you look very closely.

yep agree with Guards Red....and I can't see a £1500 bill from Specialised! They did a small patch on my wing (and repainted the whole wing to match it) for about £500....

Out of interest the same guy who quoted me £1,500 to £2,500 my work, also said a full bare metal respray would be £10,000.00.[]

He's booked up till early next year to.

I had mine done by Tony and Shaun at GTR, superb workmanship. Tony was with Porsche for 14 years or so from memory before he set up GTR. They really know 993's, are very flexible on drop off and collection, and will do the job perfectly. I can't recall exactly what I paid ( and I had other bits done at the same time) but it was quite a bit less than you are being quoted elsewhere. It is worth travelling to them for peace of mind. Good luck.

Hi Richard,

Yes you are right, I must go right out and get a GT3 [;)] but I consider my car to be <almost> a GT3 anyway [:D]

and what would I do with all my free time if I didn't have my 993 to work on?

Cheers

John

P.S. your car is pretty damn nice as well
