Broken Torque Tube Shaft!

Hi Guy's - Just a couple of questions regarding torque tubes. Are all the torque tubes and shafts from all the 944 and 968 variants the same? I was told they were but want to make double sure before I source one....I recently shredded mine

Also...would I be better off replacing the complete Torque Tube and Shaft or just the Shaft? If so...is it a bitch of a job getting the Shaft out/in?

Thanks guys

John Daly.

I don't know about the shaft but the tubes are definitely different and not swappable.

I once rebuilt a torque tube and even with the tools I made I found it to be a right pain in the back.
You might want to check with your local OPC how much an exchange unit costs.

The slot was put there to "cut" the propagation of vibrations caused by the extra 500cc - a big four pot was/is never going to be a harmonic perfection, even more so when increasing displacement.

Some 944 torque tube casings, I believe pre 89 units, have a pair of hooks supposed to block them on the rear cross brace in case of rear impact, thus preventing the whole powertrain from moving frontwards and causing excessive damage.

However these two differences have no impact on the swappabality of 944 torque tubes.

968 torque tube also have the slot, though they are shorter than 944 torque tubes as 968 have a longer clutch bellhousing, designed to allow for clutch replacement without dropping off the car most of the transmission.
