Brake upgrade - what do I need?

You can buy exchange remanufactured calipers for about £75 each. New decent pads, not bought on price alone, new braided brake hoses and new fluid will transform the brakes.

When I bought my 2.7l car the brakes were shocking - all caused by the new, but terrible, pads.

All over Andy. Kevin Eacock at EMC told me that he could get them rebuilt and re finished (silvery gold passivation coating) for about £60 each and a year or so later a small garage in a sleep Derbyshire village got a replacement exchange from the local motor factors for about £60 plus VAT.

ECP used to list them too, for a broadly similar price.

Ok, nice one thanks Simon I will look into that option,

If I remember correctly (As the service book is at home) disks and pads were changed 3 years ago and the brake fluid about 18 months ago to my knowledge and the history file the calipers have never been touched.

Andy,

In my experience of sliding calipers, this could be very relevant. I'm sure you know how sliding calipers work, but the problem is that the sliding bits cease to slide as well as they should, and hence there is very little braking force exerted on the back of the disk, and braking performance suffers badly.

I'd suggest that some rebuilt calipers and some fresh fluid and your S will stand on it's nose as quickly as any performing seal.

...and good pads too!

As Ive said, these calipers were used on 911 Turbos (a bad example if Im honest as their reputation wasnt great, but that wasnt the calipers fault) and pre-big brake 928s. These are a better example as they weighed over a tonne and a half and had almost 300bhp...

Maste cylinder is different I think between the S and S2/Turbo. I probably have all that you need Andy. I may even have a pair of M030 front calipers as well. I know I have a set of mint rear calipers. Have the front hubs and uprights as well.

Alasdair,

I'm on the look out for a decent set of replacement / refurbed S2/early turbo front calipers. Might even be persuaded by an MO30 upgrade.

The calipers were used on 911s including the first Turbo, as well as heavier and more powerful 928s, so they should be more than adequate for an 944, if theyre working properly.

Asolutely totally agree.

Why spend loads on new when your brakes clearly arent working properly.

What pads are you using?

How old is the brake fluid?

Whats the pedal like when at a standstill? Hard and still moves when pressed or soft and doesnt move when pressed?

Whats it like when the engine is running?

Is the bulkhead split?

Are the pedals/pivots in decent nick?

I think part of Andy's want to upgrade is to upgrade the look as well as the performance, although in practice its not as easy as just refurbing the calipers, as the later calipers do look much better imo...

Ok fellers,

I have had a quote from The Brake Caliper Specialists which I am happy with, so in December I will be sending them off to be fully refurbished, shot blasted and painted.

Will report back in the new year.
