Brake light bulb fitting

Anyone know why the hole for the brake light bulb to go through on the nearside unit is smaller than the off side unit or do different models take different size bulbs? Nearside unit will not take a 25mm bulb[>:]

Shouldn't be, the only hole in the unit which is different (smaller) is thebottom centre hole for the 5w rear light. The brake light is a 21w and is in the outboard lower position under the indicator.

Hope this helps...

Thanks Steve, you've set me thinking, this difference only showed up yesterday as she was being MOT 'd that the brake lights were different intensity, so maybe the previous owner has been messing with the wireing. Will have a look tonight to make sure the lamps are in the right places.

As they can be awkward to jiggle in, someone may have just put a 5w bulb in.

Or a 21/5w has been forced in and the 5w filament is contacting.

Or the bulb is corroded in the holder, which is the most likely!

Had a quick look after what Steve put. The wiring is all wrong as well as some of the bulbs. The brakes have been wired to the side lights, and vice versa also one of the bulbs is double contact []. Home work tonight is wiring diagrams and a fresh look tomorrow.

How infuriating for you...really makes you wonder what goes through the minds of previous owners when you're landed with something like this. Good luck, hope it's not too much of a nightmare!

B***dy infuriating, anyone know an accurate download for the wiring of the rear lights, one you can read the colours.cheers.

It might not be the same on all years, but the one I was looking at yesterday had:

Rear light: Grey
Brake light: Red/Black
Indicator: Black
Reversing light: Blue/Black
Fog light: Grey/White

Layout is ;
Inboard, Fog
Middle top, Reversing light
Middle bottom, Rear light
Outboard top, Indicator
Outboard bottom, Brake

Hope that makes sense..... - Getting late and the wine bottle's empty again.

Thanks for that Steve, having a look at it tomorrow. Then it's the washers to look at and hopefully an MOT pass on Wednesday.

Rear lights now sorted. Wiring in the right place, bulbs in the right place, all contacts cleaned, some very dodgy wire removed and bingo, all rear light working properly.

Then came the washers, now that was fun[8|]. When I finally got the pump out I found it looked like it hadn't worked for years, all seized and rusty. With a bit of WD 40 and some fine emery she spins up like a goodun. Couldn't do that on a modern one. Now ready for MOT.[:D]
