Braided Fuel Hoses - OPC prices not too bad!

Have you ever looked at the condition of your fuel injection hoses? Well I assumed they were ok until I was working on the fuel injection system and looked a bit closer. The stainless steel braid (applies to 1976-1979 cars) was completely through to the inner lining in several places and it looked like one hose was weeping slightly under the braid.
This got me thinking as to how long one should expect these hoses to last. I doubted if 25+ years was the design life so I started looking for replacements.

I'm intending to keep the car so don't mind spending a bit on it now and again. Consulting the PET database came up with an inclusive cost of nearly £380 which was out of the question. This was for all 7 hose units comprising 11 actual hoses and 18 hose fittings. I then took the shopping list to my local race car supplier who could renew most items but would have had to rework 2 of the fittings which aren't available off the shelf. He wanted £300 to make them to order which was still on the high side for me.

I thought I'd better see what an OPC said and rang the parts dept. at Reading. They were helpful and suggested sending one out on approval to see if it was correct (as well as indicating that the prices were adjustable). I should say at this point that the hoses on my car differed from the PET illustration so I didn't want to pay out without knowing I was buying the correct part - which Porsche was not able to confirm; so getting them on approval was extremely helpful.

The final bill was £211 which is a 44% discount on list. This equates to £5 for each hose and each fitting plus £10 make up charge per hose assembly. Check out Aeroquip or Moquip TFE hose prices and you'll see this is very reasonable. With all the flak that OPCs get for their prices (justifiably sometimes) on this and other forums I thought it was time for a good news story. The braided hoses also make a big difference to the look of the engine bay.

BTW fitting them is fairly straight forward though you do need a Dutch boy (or similar) to put a finger on the return line to prevent all the fuel in the tank from being siphoned out while you fit that hose. A blank fitting would work but only if you know in advance that its going to happen [;)]. You also need to be careful that no dirt or grit gets into the metering unit.
