Bonnet handle snapped

At the end of the trackday at Bedford I went to open the bonnet and check the oil but something snapped at the handle end and a piece of plastic fell on to the passenger footwell. [] The 24 year old plastic in the triangular shaped bonnet handle cup had finally given way.

A quick search on Ebay found a complete 2nd hand handle for £20 plus postage, not bad I thought but I then gave Stuart in Parts at Exeter OPC a quick call and I now have a brand new triangular surround (928.511.173.02) for £7.13 plus the VAT with free 2nd class postage. I got a new pull handle (928.511.175.02) as well just in case and that was £1.87 plus VAT

Nod 1: Common failure.
Nod 2: Clowns on eBay sell worn out tat for comical prices to the naïve.
Nod 3: Frequently cheaper to buy a new unfatigued part from your OPC.

I always struggle with the logic of buying something to replace a part that's worn through age, with one that's as old. [8|]

Buy new, whilst they're available. Even if they aren't cheaper it makes sense!

Sun visor clips and 944 rear hatch lock grommets are both excellent examples. £1ish and £3ish - compare this to the price that the breaking parasites are charging.

One chancer on e bay flogged a set of NLA brand new original overmats for £132 you could still get them at OPC for £74, certain breakers prices are getting silly.

Snag is that pricing at OPC's is far from consistent. I replaced exactly the same pair of parts about 18 months ago with new ones from an OPC, but had my wallet emptied of about £22 for the privilege.

Come to think of it, what is the OPC pricing method? Think of a number and double it/halve it/add on your telephone number/divide it by last week's lottery winning numbers?

What Oli has said, how do they work the pricing out ?? bloody rotor arm near enough £50, Berlyn do them at £17 but it comes in a Bosch box not a Porsche box, i bought new belts from my local motor factors approximately £45 trade price, a mate bought his from OPC approx £140.....................both sets were Gates Powergrip......expensive bloody boxes !

FWIW, I have seen previously dealer stuff being superior to 'OE' stuff from the motor factors.

Two examples that come to mind are regarding my 205 GTi. I can get Dayco cambelts from both Peugeot and GSF. However, the item from the stealer tends to be better (it's slightly thicker and has a different part number; that even comes from a specialist who would benefit for keeping such info quiet!). The same goes for the clutch (quite a few people have suffered spring failures with the Valeo centre plate from the likes of ECP or GSF, the Valeo item from Peugeot has tougher/larger springs in the centre plate...).

Even I must say that the prices charged by an OPC seem to vary alot!
