hiya,,thanks to oli,for popping over to mine and going over my s2,as i was considering selling her and getting a lower mileage 944,,
as oli checked her over ,,we become aware the s2 had had at some point had a full air con system [rare as hens teeth in s2s i believe] and it had been dis- connected as well as a full porsche tool kit and electric compressor,,this and the over all condition plus over £5k spent in the last 15,000 miles only!.i have a small piece of rust on the bottom of the front wing driver side.so apart from a few jobs like cambelt as i have owned her for 4yrs and although i have done just over only 7,000 miles since my last belt change,,i will get all the jobs done and the bodywork attended too asap but my baby is now going nowhere accept the specialists and then the bodyshop to have the rust and panels painted,,doesnt need a windows out job and is in very good condition and drives very well quoting oli "that your barking mad if you get rid",,so i am gonna spend some most of my budget i have for a different 944 and get my baby up to scratch,,thanks again oli,,decision made and have cleared my mind of thoughts of getting rid lol regards jason p

Oli speaks sense. Your car is a known entity and you could easily get rid and be hit with a £5k bill fixing up a new one.

If you want I will ask Dave at Daytona what he would charge for a blow over and fixing the wing. I am sure he will look after you.

Plus it's a red s2......fastest of them all ;)

thanks andrew,,i would appreciate that,,yeah oli,,went over her in depth and we found the disconnected air-con system and a working electric compressor in the box that looked in great condition,,so happy i have finally decided to keep her as i was probably going to buy another guards red or white s2,,will send her to tower porsche with a list including pads,,cambelt,bearing/s etc, [nothing too drastic as all the biggies have been done],check calipers for plate lift and anything else, then off to the bodyshop,,
my car had a torque tube,,all suspension components replaced and/or serviced, gearbox rebuild,,new clutch [all work done by porsche tonbridge/ la rose],,all front oil seals, all belts rollers etc plus x4 new tyres and all the little jobs since i got her 4 yrs ago totalling well over £5k ,so when the present work is all finished she should be good for many years to come,,regards and thanks jason p

Ha! Jason, you beat me to it - I have the list of things I spotted here in front of me and I was going to write you an eMail. I think I'll put it up here instead!

- Bodywork is a little rusty, as you know. Not badly so, but that's about the only thing you need get looked at as a matter of urgency as it will get worse with time. Shop around, ask for recommendations on here, talk to Jon at Tower Porsche (020 7357 0911) and see who else people recommend who won't fleece you. You shouldn't have to spend a fortune on having the rust taken out.

I would seriously suggest taking the black plastic trim panels off the bottom of the front wings and underneath the sills as these are rust traps. You won't miss them but it could save you grief in the long run - they were full of crud already and could cause you significant future problems. And you need to clean thoroughly behind the rear wheel arches as well for the same reason.

Yes, there are a couple of panels which are a slightly different colour, and some lacquer lifting in places, but it's no worse than it looks - it's only cosmetic. You can't see those bits when driving her, and other people won't notice them when you are going fast (the S2 being the fastest model of 944!) You could spend quite a lot of money having these bits sorted out but - frankly - I'd keep that cash in my pocket.

When you are having the rust sorted out then talk to the bodyshop about the funny curve on the sides of the front bumper. I'm sure this will be trivial to sort out.

- Mechanically it seems fine. The presence of most of an air-con system is bemusing and there's a story in there somewhere but I wouldn't let it bother you. Other things you need to think about are;

* There is a wheel bearing gone on it somewhere, I think it's N/S/F. This will probably explain the steering judder as well.
* There is a rattle from the rear, sounding like it's at the wheel end of a suspension arm. This could be a loose brake pad or something like that.
* You said the brake pad warning light lit up recently, so find the worn pads and change them.
* The handbrake will need adjusting (I suspect it will fail the MOT as it is)
* Belts - if they are due.

- The interior is a little worse for wear, particularly the headlining, which may be quite expensive to sort out professionally but is something you could probably do very cheaply if you felt so inclined. Or - just leave it!

She's not the finest example of a 944 currently in existence but she's a long long way from being the worst. She has had some money spent on her and has very very straight bodywork with lovely even panel gaps and no sign of any serious repairs done. She drove well and showed no signs of any mechanical problems apart from the wheel bearing. You are the second owner from new and have all the history. You could sell her and put the money you raise, along with the £5k burning a hole in your pocket, into another car, but there is no guarantee that you'd get anything better - just as Andrew says.

You'd be barking mad to get rid of her ([;)]). You said it yourself - you love her! Put £1000 - £1500 aside for some repairs and some rust treatment, put £1000 into a good holiday for you and your missis, £500 towards cat food for your beautiful felines, £1000 towards some petrol (you need to drive her more!) and £1000 into a decent savings account!

Seriously. You have a good S2 there. Don't sell her.

hiya,,,oli again,,thanks so much,,shes going nowhere except into john at tower porsche asap and then the bodywork,,
decision made,,no change or swop,,looking forward to getting her up to scatch,,going to have a pro-max chip fitted and new gear stick lever as well as work stated,,regards jason p

Jason - if you can send me some better photos of the car and the wing etc I will send them to Dave at Daytona and ask for a quote to give you a reference pt re: costs. I have emailed him already and this is what he needs to give you and accurate figure. either pm me or email. (nb: your PM box is full)

This is second hand Ed, but I believe that they do both. A sunroof car is far far easier to retrim and thats the kit that they offer for £40, I believe.

I though that this all seemed a little familiar - theres a thread mentioning the headlining kit on TIPEC which Ive commented on. This: http://forums.tipec.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=10743 is a link to Ken's fitting thread and where I believe that I first heard about them.

Jason, sounds like some very sound advice from Oli, you'll have an even more sorted S2 (in the fastest colour) and some money in the bank still ;)

Jason looks like Oli has done you a good turn.

NOW BE CAREFUL........................................................

If he produces a bucket of frogs and a tub of swarfega.................................. RUN [:D][:D][:D][:D]

hiya,,thanks for all the kind words everyone and oli did a grand job , confirming what my heart, had been telling me all along,,
i really am so very happy that i am keeping her,,mechanical stuff first and will cover any issues whatsoever and then onto the bodyshop,
i will also going to ask john at tower ,what would it take to get the air-con system going,,just out of interest lol,,
its all in place but dont think i will be lucky enogh to have her just re-connected and re-gassed,,as i imagine there will be leaks etc,,cant believe the other owner had air con fitted and then totally neglected it!
,so with £4k to £5k spent on her in the last 15k miles and the future work,,all should be well for a very long time,,,regards and thanks again jason p

The air-con system is a bit rum, and I can't imagine how it came to be as it is (big lumpy bits still in place, probably with pipework, but the control panel on the dashboard swapped for a non-A/C one).

Yes, do ask Jon but I suspect that getting it going again will be quite pricey. I suspect it developed a fault so was taken out of service. To re-commission it you'd need to find and repair the fault, attend to anything else that has gone wrong in the last few years (the seals will all have dried out so will need to be replaced), fit the proper control panel (and anything else that has been removed) and re-gas it. I fear that little lot will end up not being cheap, but it's well worth asking.

hiya,,oli yeah i agree, would be interested to find out what may have happened with the air-con system,,
i know i am going to have brake fluids changed but should i also have new gearbox oil? [15k miles since complete rebuild],headlining looks like it may be worth doing,
apart from that,, as front sport seats and back seats in linen leather are in great shape[electrics working on both],dashboard not sunbleached with no cracks and all electrics working with clear switches/buttons even the clock, and og mats,,i wonder what else i could do to bring her up to shape apart from headlining and loose drivers/side bottom speaker case/thingy? ,any ideas appreciated, [a bloody good interior valet apart]..lol
i will be giving john a call tommorow and see if i can get her booked in asap,,thanks jason p

Jason,

As far as the gearbox oil goes there is no 'should' about it; it doesn't need it, but it may benefit from it. Having said that, there are more pressing problems (in that the gearbox oil isn't pressing at all) so I'd save your cash and do it next year.

(Besides, if you do decide to change it then your next question will be "What gearbox oil should I put in?" and then everyone on here will start shouting at each other about it. And I don't want that to happen! [;)])

Oli.

ETA: Say 'Hi' to Jon from me. Oli with the Baltic S2. Tell him that the black Turbo I bought to him last year proved to be a cracking car and he was quite correct on every point about it.

oli,,will pass that onto john at tower, ok,stick to the jobs that need doing and gearbox oil another time but probably would have used swepco lol,,on account of all the hard driving i do,lol,,regards jason p
