Best air filter for an S2?

Hi guys, the previous owner fitted a K&N about 30k ago and as it's going in for some work where the badge panel is coming off I thought it may be time to change/clean/upgrade.

Any recommendations, I've never cleaned a K&N before, I'm sure its messy but is it effective or is there something better that I should buy?
 
I would just clean it and put it back in, the k&n seems a popular upgrade from stock, main advantage is that it doesnt need to be replaced, just cleaned. K&N do there own cleaner but I would have thought any decent solvent would do the trick. (be sure to rinse and dry it out before putting back in).

Cleaning a K&N is a 2 stage process.
1 - Wash with solvent to clean it.
2 - Re-oil the filter (with K&N filter oil) . The oil helps the filter catch small particles.

Without the oil, all you are doing is putting a restriction in the air intake that will stop large items, but you aren't really filtering the air.
