Battery Tray Corrosion (Series 2)

Principally towards the rear of the car - how have people dealt with this, please?

Toward the rear of the car, the rebate is corroded quite badly and the tray floor up against it is flakey and thickened. Thats the extent of my knowledge so far.

Melv, I hadnt ever seen those before, but I have taken note, thank you.
 
That is a good piece of kit, thanks for sharing there is nothing wrong with my battery tray but will get one anyway.
Not quite such a bargain though!

£4.50 postage!!! + the VAT makes a total of £11.32

Why do these companies rip people off with postage?

Sulzeruk has repaired this on at least two previous occasions. I am sure he posted photos on here about 18 months. He's used off cut from a new panel on one car and a cut out section from a scrapper on the other. On both occasions - once painted - result was first class.
 
The only way to repair rust is to cut it out and replace with new metal. End of story no debate .
 
Youve missed the point somewhat Colin. It obviously needs to be cut out, but simply saying cut it out and 'replace it' does not actually provide an answer.

It isnt 100mm square of .8mm thick mild steel, its a convoluted shape.

I'm sorry I was talking generally. The only effective way to get rid of rust is to cut it out.

You could contact one of the breakers and have them cut one from a scrap car for you or you could make a new one from a sheet 1.5 mm steel.

I wont get back into the garage until Wed night, but I'll have a look at mine and see how hard it would be to make a copy of the battery tray.If make one I'll send it to you.
 
A new replacement panel is not available from Porsche as I spent a month emailing the factory about it. The part appear in PET either. The only way to do it is chop a good one out of another car, it is a pain to get them out as they are welded in in 3 plains!
I may have a serviceable one in a car up here Simon but it is not an easy job to get it out or put the new one in. If there is metal missing underneath, it is best to cut a hole out the bottom when you are reaplcing that as it is easier to get into the bottom of the panel.

It looks like a terrible job Al, even if you have a car / rear 1/4 with a perfect tray...

I had presumed that people attempt to cut out only what is corrosed on their own car, but I cant see how you would get to do a proper job.
