bad 2nd gear shift

Hi,

I have a 06 plate 997S with 6000 miles on the clock,

it has the short shift kit fitted,

since new the shift into 2nd has been appauling, when cold it will not go in until you have slower to about half of walking pace, ie wheels just rolling, after about 15 miles it's better but you can still feel the teeth catch but not grind into gear.

I drive about 15 miles to work every day and have given up on 2nd and just give it a rev in 1st then it goes straight into 3rd no problem but have decided on a 70K car this is not good enough.

I understand the shift kit just alters the pivot points and means a little more effort is required but his is a different issue.

I will be contacting the dealer next week but wanted to do a little research first,

Am I the only one or is this a common complaint ?

many thanks

Dave

Dave you are not alone in noticing a troublesome first to second shift. I have the same set-up as you and until warm the shift to second is less smooth than other gears, but after ten miles or so its so good that I am more than happy to live with it. If you are experiencing problems after 15 miles of driving then the cable/linkage probably needs adjusting.

Same here... One thing I'd have to think about if spec'ing again, would be the short shift. []

Hi,

thanks for the reply's,

but Allen the shift is not ' quite as smooth' as the others, the gate is blocked, it will not select at all for 10 or 15 miles unless you are at a standstill.

Gary, I don't think the short shift is my problem as all other gears are fine,

It could well be an issue with your selector, my point was that 2nd is the only gear I struggle with, all the rest are fine.
However it does go in and becomes easier as the car gets warmer.
Hope you get it sorted.

The short shifter leaflet from Porsche states that the shift from first to second can be difficult in cold weather, and until the gearbox has warmed up; it doesn't always happen - and I didn't experience it at all with the post-delivery installation on my 997 C4S, which was undertaken by OPC Mid-Sussex. So what you're experiencing may be the expected trait .

ashtrans,

Dont think its a problem, rather, something to be driven 'around'.

I have the short shifter and yes it is sort of cantankerous when cold but oh so slick when warm. No problem then.

If you want to sample a truly horrid gearbox when cold, try an M3 !
