At long last...

I had two strange problems with the 944, and have sorted them at last.
- one was the coolant level would lose about a pint of coolant over 1000 miles. This was worse in the Summer.
- the other was the clutch action could be less than the superbly smooth, hewn from granite engagement we are all familiar with.

I got a clue when 4 wheel aligning the car a few weeks back. The alignment guy wanted the engine running to keep the power steering operational.

During this time a number of water drops appeared below the starter motor area on the floor. While on the 4 wheel align car-lift.

Long story short, a dry cloth located below the heater valve, would be damp after a 20 mile round trip. (Was careful not to start a fire). This was on a dry day, and was wrong obviously.

The thought occurred to me the coolant drip was entering the clutch housing area, and causing corrosion on the bare steel shaft, which in turn was juddering during the sliding operation of the clutch, this was worst when the heater valve was operated frequently as is the case in summer. Heater on at night, off in daytime.

Replaced the HV and two hoses each side of it

Both problems solved [:)]
