Anyone know this car? H676MJH

Hi

Ive been drawn to a blue 944S2 (H676MJH) its not perfect but I like to colour. The current owner claims it has a full OPC history till 2010 but hasn't got the log book only some records and therefore Im struggling to verify this. Obviously if it has a full SH then it should in theory be reasonably well maintained. Looks like it needs some body work attention and tidying up to make a very nice car. If anyone recognises the car and can talk to me about it Id appreciate it.

Also it is a late S2 with the new shape rear spoiler. Did that come as standard with the later cars?

Thanks

Andrew

there is a posting on TIPEC re: bridge spoilers and it appears they were fitted mid 90 black as std and then colour coded to car in 91.

Don't know the car. The "bridge spoiler" was introduced for MY '91 cars (in Porsche speak) which in reality means second half of 1990 onwards.

Thanks all

Im working with the owner to contact the various porsche folks for the details.

Taking some time :)

thanks again

Andrew

It's for sale on this site (see link) as well as ending tomorrow on Ebay.

As I'm sure others will say, you can either drive it with your fingers crossed or budget on a £1k minimum service straight away, still a cheap car as it is if you are hands on. I have been watching it on Ebay as have other people I know.

IMO I would hold out for another car I hate to say. You can easily chuck a good chunk of money at the exterior. Interior looks smart mind you.

Good old ebay:)

It is creeping up isnt it. I know someone who will sort out the body work for me (he currently has my 914) but it will take a lot of time to complete so not idea as Id like to use the car as a daily.

It might be easier to try and find a mint s2 instead to save the hassle. I really like the colour though. N mind. If anyone knows of a reasonably priced VGC S2 with a full history please let me know.

Thanks

Andrew

Really hard to know with this car; it could be a bargain at that sort of price, it's a gorgeuos colour and interior. Trouble is, until you see the srvice history it's nigh-on impossible to judge it.

If it was serviced by a PC until 2010, then that would be the last time anything major was done I guess? On that basis, if the belts were done then it's due next year and could easily be a grand. You'd need to see that the clutch wasn't original, the brake calipers have been overhauled, and the fuel and brake lines replaced. That could be another three grand! Factor in the cost of the bodywork, it looks from the ad as if it's needing quite a lot of work to bring it up to good nick, and you could have a £7K-plus bill on top of purchase price. That's all worst-case, of course, and guesimating at specialist prices; if you can do the work yourself it's a different matter. Even so, it's a lot of potential work and parts.

If the history turns up, and at least some of the major work is up to date, then it looks viable. Otherwise it's got to be considered a project, or you look for a car where someone's already spent loads. Unless it's just a cheap S2 that you want to run in to the ground, of course.

The item on TIPEC is regarding a Turbo and the introduction of the bridge spoiler on same, on the S2 I think it was an option even at 91 as it was not selected as an option on my 91 S2 which has the rubber spoiler.

I thought all the late 90 and 91 S2's had the bridge spoiler, my two previous J plate S2's had bridges, one was black and one colour coded guards red. Certainly all the books on 944's state that the bridge became standard on the S2 towards the end of the model run, can't say I've ever heard of it being an option and never seen a J plate with rubber spoiler.

Cheers, Paul

Not an option in my experience. You have to remember that many of these cars have had items swapped over.

Sadly Ive contact Porsche and they can only confirm recent services in 2009 and 2010. No belt change during that time and no other history though one of the mechanics remembers working on the car from a previous owner. Not sure how the history got lost with Porsche I thought they would be more meticulous. I concur with your estimates by the way I think your right with that amount. I dont want to do any work myself as I already have a project on the go. Id be having a reliable car to restore in a couple of years but I think Id be even happier with a car I didnt have to restore :) Just love the colour as well.

mmmm more to ponder on!

My S2 is H 91 registered Jan 1991 so probably MY90 (Porsche half year model change philosophy) rather than 91 which is what the J plate cars would be so I would agree J plate cars tend to have the bridge spoiler same as on the Turbo from the year before, however froom my sale invoice it was offered as an option which the buyer didn't take up so it has a rubber spoiler, same as the three other h plate S2s in my area. I also know my car is on the original hatch and spoiler as new.

Assuming it's as good as the advert suggests I'd be off to view that one today myself. The respray alone would be probably half that price, the last service another £1K or more. Again, you have to look closely, but any resprayed and protected S2 is worth more than that IMO. Almost seems suspiciously cheap! Perhaps they worry the mileage is an issue, but if it's been maintained that's not relevant; in fact it's more likely to have had major work such as the clutch or HG done on it.

I do know this car and it is in very good condition , the garage the business is attached to is Powels of Ripon and they specialise in restoration of very rare cars , they are excellent traditional craftsmen and the owner and sons are meticulous in there work.
They work on some wonderful classic cars and a surprise is always there when I visit.
The S2 is also in a rare colour linked to top Porsche salesman awards I believe.

I really don't understand all this nonsense about service history on a car costing £1.5k

Jeezus what do people expect from a 23 year old car thats been round the clock at least once and priced at £1.5k? scarcely 3x weeks wages for most working folk .!??? You could get that much back by parting the car.!

Why do people look to buy a car at rock bottom prices and then expect it to be a fully serviced cherished concours condition car ?

Its probably had just about everything replaced in 23 years and is bound to have some rust dents and scratches etc.

The most sensible thing to do is to decide if you intend to keep and restore the car to a high standard or just buy a cheap runaround with a years MOT , spend as little as possible and have some fun with the thing.
If you intend tpo keep it you would be far better off buying a car that had already been restored but they cost from £5k upwards. Then you would want to see some service history and receipts

Hi

I see your point but I dont want to break the car that would be a shame. And having already bought a car unseen off ebay that was positioned as needing TLC only to have to rebuild it nut and bolt (currently half way through and already several k spent) I didn't want to make the same mistake twice. Im trying to verify something the owner has already stated that it has a full service history to me it adds value in that I would know the body restoration was the only issue, with out some history I have no idea and yes Id be tempted to look for something else.

Sorry if my logic surprised you in some way but Im talking from experience.
