Anyone fitted remote locking to an early lux

I've got an 82 Lux with no central locking. I remember you used to be able to buy aftermarket 2 door remote locking kits from somewhere like cpc. Anyone had any experience with these?

I've fitted the Maplin kit to cars with no central locking before - not an early Lux, but the job would be the same.

It's not hard at all. A satisfying job for a dull Saturday. Just make sure that when you mount the motors in the doors, they push and pull in-line with the movement of the door pins. They will work if they are off-line, but will fail depressingly early ...

Oh, and you may well shred your hands working inside the doors. Expect lots of small scratches and cuts by the time you are done.

Get a decent alarm and you can interface the two, giving remote central locking. (And if you really know what you are doing, you can then interface those with the standard alarm and Hamilton-Palmer immobiliser, and have a very secure car! Yes, it can be done!)

I agree with Oli abou the Maplin kits, cheap cheerful and easy to fit.

A question for those in the know though - on the 944 the standard central locking actuators are of the 5 wire variety, whereas on other cars like my MX-5 they are 2 wire.

Why is this? My only guess is that the central locking also interfaces with a locking mechanism on the sunroof in the 944 (or at least it does according to the manual).

Matt,

I think that the 5-wire actuators have a sensor (switch) in them as well, to tell the system which position they are in. Hence, if you don't have any other way of triggering the system (a remote control/alarm), you can unlock the whole car by unlocking the door with the 5-wire motor in it. You move the mechanism with the key, which moves the motor, which tells the control system it has been moved, which then unlocks the other doors.

The 2-wire ones are just motors - no sensor.

If you ever fit one, make sure you identify the wires correctly ... otherwise you get the interesting situation where you lock the drivers door and the other doors all open ... and vice versa.

Ask me how I know ... []

There is also feedback for the sunroof - If I lock my car with the sunroof in but not locked, i.e. if I have just put it back in - the arms drive up and engage into the sunroof locking it closed.
