Lads, Hi
I am having some engine trouble since I let a local guy( maintained he had lots of 930 & 935 experience, long story) give my engine the once over even though there was nothing wrong with it. I am now working my way thru the troubleshooting process myself. I am making some progress. Basically I need to know if you are aware of anyone that really knows their stuff about these engines
My car is a '76 930, 3.0 not 3.3

hi, thanks for the reply
To tell you the truth I'd like to find someone local to bring the car to as the problems I am having are complicated and multiple.
I brought the car( with no problems) to a local german guy( just an enthusiast) who had a history with porsches to give it the once over since the previous owner nor I had any work done to it in 4 years.
It is sick as a pig since. Bad idle, on cold start she sometimes sounds like she runs on only a few cylinders, refuses to start after she sits for an hour, leaks lots more oil, running rich, temp guage not working, charging light not going out, she even pissed oil out thru the air filter one day it was acually driveable. I am a little handy but have no experience with these engines. I have done plenty work on her since I get her back and have plans to tackle some of the problems once I get the charging problem sorted. I could do with an experienced eye or ear though.
For instance I cannot seem to find any idle ajustment on the engine??
The was no pressure accumulator on her either??
I am not really sure what that guy did to her as I cannot get a straight answer from him
You see my prediciment
frank( a young entusiast and 930 lover)
Its an original 76 930 ( 3.0L as I am sure you know)

Hi Frank, firstly as a matter of urgency the oil quantity must be confirmed , what you dont want is oil entering the cylinders and causing the engine to hydraulic. Make sure engine is turning over freely by hand first. Next step is to confirm that the firing order is correct 162435. These are things you should be able to do I hope but from here on in it starts to get much more complicated. Fuel pressures must now be checked requireing specialist equipment. System Pressure ( fuel pump pressure ) and Control Pressure ( pressure above the metering head) must also be checked as well as Holding pressure. I will gladly talk you through each proceedure to get your car running as it should be, my number can be found by looking through the current Porsche Post or contacting your regions RO. or keep in touch through this forum. Cheers.

Hi, Firing order is ok. She Ticks over nicely sometimes. I did compression tests on all cyls and the are fine too. I am having the altenator test at the mo. and hopefully when I have this sorted I will be better off overall. I am off to Canada in the morning for a few weeks but I will contact you again when I get back
thanks again
frank

Hi,
I am back.
I got the electrical problem sorted at the weekend. The battery is charging and the temp guage is ok. She has been running at a hair over 180 after about 1/2 hour on the road. No oil spat thru the air filter this time.
current known/suspected problems:
Idle is not good. She will usually cut out when I clutch or let it idle( tough to start right away, can refuse)
I have a feeling the misture is rich( well, plugs are very black and sooty(spark may have been inadequate too before electrical problem was sorted))
I darined some oil from the tank before I left. The first liquid to come form the bung in the tank was clear(never checked to see what it was)
The oil level is still high on the guage and the dipstick. Could petrol be getting into the oil somehow??
Oh yeah, When I started it first after returning home( was sitting for 3weeks)she billowed clouds of white smoke( it may have been a little blue I never noticed, white is the colour I recall) for a few minutes. oil??
Tell me what you think of all this. She is running well at speed. She backfires a bit upon liftoff ( this is a new development)
Have not had any timing checked recently
