Another tyre question ... 924

My newly aquired 924 has Dunlop SP Sport 3000 tyres all round, on the standard 14" wheels. They are OK, but I'm less than enamoured with them, so what does anyone recommend as replacements? I assume that there is probably now a limited choice in the 185 x 14 size.

Thanks

Round Ones. You pays your money.......

I am using Avon zz3 on my Turbo with 16 inch wheels, and on my lux with 15 inch LeMans wheels. Good wet grip.

Just she shoed my 928. Took off coopers on front and Avon ZZ on the rear as they were awful. The guy at Bracknell Tyre and Battery said they were both rubbist and I can certainly say they could grip a thing. Now got Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 all round Z rated 225/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear all fitted + VAT for 395.00. So cheap from them as well. Other suggestions for performance from reviews on the web include Khumos that are cheap but don't last as long as some others but apparently ok grip and Toyo Proxes T1S almost as good as the above. Some review below:

Good luck.

Thank you both for the responses. I have used both Khumos and Toyos before and rate them highly, the problem is that I doubt if they will now be available in the rather archaic 185 x 14 size. I guess I'd better go ask my tyre chap.

Have a look on BlackCircles on the web and others:

Good luck

Funny isn't it. Good years on the front of my Audi 80 were dire. You have to compare like for like. What suits a 924 wont necessarily translate to a car weighing some 300kg more. I must admit that the back of my S4 doesnt grip well in the wet, and that has zz3's, but I have scared myself in the wet on the z1 and zz3s on my 924. Its all degrees of excelence, really. If manufacturers made a bad tyre they would go out of business.

That Blackcircles site is very good, thanks. Didn't realise that they could organise local fitting too.

Have any of you tired 195/65 x 14 tyres on the standard wheels instead of the regular 185/70 x 14's?

I ask because there seems to be a better selction of more modern looking rubber available in this size, and I would guess that the rolling radius must be almost identical (I've yet to look it up, but if you know ... please post!) Are the standard rims wide enought to take 195's? Would it make the steering to heavy?

Cheers

Hi all
Just bringing this post back from the dead as I am about to purchase my race tyres and am very intrested in
1. Tyre size options on standard rims.
2. What other wheel choice is out there? must be 14inch and max 6inch wide.

An excellent source is http://www.mytyres.co.uk/Tyres.html

I've just bought my new tyres from them, very keenly priced and quick delivery (straight to your local tyre fitter if you want)

I don't know the profile you're after but I searched on 185/60, 185/65 and 185/70R14 and they've got loads from top brands to unknown makes

Hi Kevin, don't most of the 924 championship racers use a Compomotive rim? I've always thought they look good. Check out this. They list a couple of 6x14 and 5.5x14 rims. Click on the red dot to see the rim.

Yeah I used mytyres last time for the 911 fantastic prices, I think im going to end up with the compomotive above, if I cant find anything else, I was hoping there would be a cheap audi wheel of the period.

Yes I've got Bridgestone B530s (205 x 60 R14) all round on standard 4 bolt rims with no spacers, and the NA 2.0L feels like its on rails. The downsides are very heavy steering at parking speeds (and presumably wear in the appropriate places) and it tramlines on poor road sufaces. The car came with those tyres and Bridgestone had only 4 in the country at £135+VAT each +fitting at the last count!
