Another speakers thread...

Hi all,

I've spent quite a bit of time reading the archived threads on different speak suggestions for the 944.

Mine is a 4 speaker S2 from 1990 if that makes any difference. I have a Kenwood headunit and some Pyle speakers which are beyond awful! Any hint of bass and there is a horrendous rattle to accompany it. I believe the rear speakers are standard still.

I'm not looking to shake the car apart, but as it is a car I will be taking to Le Mans and other such venues, having good audio is important to me. I have no intentions on racing the car either so weight isn't a huge concern. I have seen the spare wheel bass box mod which looks ideal. Again, I don't want anything really loud but deep bass would be good and I can cut all bass from the cabin speakers then.

Has anyone got some 'affordable' recommendations from front replacements? Is Dynamat worth the investment too?

I saw these from another thread from way back when but have no idea what they're like - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170778086532?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_1031wt_1115

Thanks

Will

JBL's are a good budget buy, OK if your using a sub, I would go for infinity Kappa 6x4 plate speakers if you can find any or maybe Kenwood's
Do not underestimate the effect of the rear speakers they are closer to your ears than the fronts....I would and have fitted some 6" coaxials, you could buy the 10 speaker rear grilles and remove some of the panel restriction but it would still look original.
my install thread is on TIPEC (Audio Install) for some ideas.....Dynamat is good stuff but "brown bread" is cheaper as just as good IMHO but spend money on the speakers first then if any spare sound deadening

Thanks for your reply. I'll checkout your thread. The front speakers don't look too bad to replace but the rears in any car are usually more tricky. Have you got a sub running on your setup?

Cheers

Just read your thread, that is a very impressive install, probably a bit more than I want to do though.

A 10" or 12" sub in the spare wheel space and some uprated speakers in the cabin for mid and high. Are the rears easy to get at to change? I have a Kenwood headunit already so that can stay for the time being.

The JBL speakers I linked to in my first post, are the Alpine versions any better? They are a fraction more expensive.

Cheers

A later series two car like yours will have space for far larger rear speakers. They have a blanking panel where standard rectangular speakers are being used.

Ah right, that's good to know. I just bought this as a bass solution - http://www.inphaseaudio.co.uk/products/enclosures/ultra-compact-active-subwoofer/usw10/

I'll upgrade the front and rears together in a couple of weeks.

Having never tried JBL,s and Alpines I could not say which is best I would google reviews or if all else fails compare the sensitivity (large number better) and frequency response greater range is better.

944 man is right[:D] the rears will drop straight in but you have to remove the rear window and trim panel but this is very easy to do

Let me know how you get on with your Active subs my all accounts they are a good option

Oh yes post some photo's of the install so much more interesting [;)]

For anyone interested in a bit of bass in your 944 I would recommend the In Phase USW10. The physical unit is pretty heavy and of a decent build quality. The enture unit is made from metal. Included in the box are all of the leads you will require to wire the sub into your existing headunit. I paid an extra £5 from Halfords and bought an RCA lead (not included as standard). There are multiple wiring diagrams in the instruction booklet so you can follow the method of your choice.

I loosely fitted the sub last night, just to test the sound quality and have to say I am more than impressed. The bass is huge for the size of the unit. I tested it with some dance music and at pretty loud volumes and it was awesome, no rattles or distortion, crisp notes from the sub. I filtered out the bass from the cabin speakers so they only provide mids and highs and it was excellent! The sub comes with a fitting kit which you can easily fit into the boot of the 944. The footprint is small so you'll hardly notice it sitting there on the carpet. It didn't fit under the front seats but you could easily mount it in a rear footwell.

Very happy with my purchase! This evening entails cable tidying and running the RCA and remote lead under the carpets from, front to rear.
