..Another newbie saying Hello!

Hi guys.

I just wanted to say a big hello. I purchased a lovely 944 at the weekend and Im sure it will mean that I become a regular on here.

I used to own a fantastic little Honda CRX and always regretted getting rid of it to keep the Mrs happy. Since that I got a Celica (which has never 'done it' for me like the crx did). I have been on the lookout for a 944 (which I feel bears a resemblance to a crx) for about 5 months now and finally got one at the weekend.

This is her..









Considering she is 23 years old she is in good nick. She seems to have common problems with some rusting in the underside of the arches and a couple of splits in the drivers seat bolster but nothing too bad.

The ride is good if a little 'rattly' - but as i said before I would expect as much for a car made in '86. Im a bit concerned about the fuel economy to be honest. I expected it to be poor but so far I have been doing mainly motorway miles. I have used half a tank and only covered 140 miles [&:]

I have booked her in to redline racing near to where I live next week for a decent service and an 'inspection'(it looks like she has not had an oil change in 2 years). I plan on maintaining her to a high standard (as far as finances will allow anyway) and Im sure the advice on here will be second to none. I just prey redline dont find the headgasket is on its way out or something!!

I look forward to a long happy relationship and im sure I will become a regular contributor on here (talking rubbish most of the time [] )

If anyone has owned the car or has seen it in the past I would also like to hear from you (providing you are not going to tell me its a cut and shut!)

I use my 87 944 as my daily driver and I am managing to get an average 30mpg, but have found my petrol guage is not quite linear.

And I do find it hard to resist the temptation to let her rip on the dual carriageway on my way to work...[]

My former car, good to see its still around and shiny, I believe after me it had a water pump issue and had some engine work - not sure about the graphics or steering wheel badge but otherwise looks like the years have treated it well,

Nice. Could be improved immensely and cheaply by losing those dreadful "Porsche" number plastes and the badge stuck on the steering wheel. Good look with it and get the belts done []

Looks like a nice one. (Stupid Q - I presume that someone put that numberplate on it because of the '944' in it, and it isn't really a C-reg car? I didn't think that ones as early as that had the oval dashes.) Take care of it and it should last you well.

Economy: do it scientifically, putting a known amount of fuel in it and measuring how long that takes to use up. Vary across different driving (motorway/A-road/town etc) and then start to wonder whether it is a bit thirsty. Of course, when it is sevriced they may find an answer. Also, if it really hasn't had the oil swapped for two years then doing this will help the economy too.

Hello, yes that use to be mine, sold it to guy i worked with in April '08, only owned it since October '06, intended keeping it some time but got the chance of a nice S2. She was a nice clean car, funnily enough I had a call a couple of weeks ago from a guy in Scotland who was going to look at it and was asking me a few questions, he told me its had another 3 keepers since I sold it [&:] which is a shame. I fitted the 16 inch teledials instead of 15's, bought them from one of the lads on here, and that big red file you have with all the receipts and maintanence diary was all written by me too.

The only issue I had with her was she was burning a little oil when you put your foot down and I doubt its got any better since then, especially if its had so many keepers in a short space of time! I hope shes got a good home now, enjoy []

Would be nice to see her again at one of our monthly meets here in the northeast []

Nice car and I think I recognise from a recent browse of Pistonheads or Autotrader.

Regarding your fuel consumption, do also check that you aren't losing fuel from the fuel lines. They have a tendency to corrode on our cars, leading to a loss of fuel and subsequent skewed MPG figures. Either way, definitely change the oil though.

Welcome to the Forum Neil, as another relative newcomer i can attest to the fact that you have come to the right place for good advice.

I have a red Turbo (the fastest colour) and get around 275 miles to a tabkful on short journeys which are either done at a steady 40 mph or seeking the redline, with not much in between!

I am jealous of the redness of your paint!

Nice to see pics of Tonys old car again [] (I didn't realise Nick had owned it too)

Motorway miles are normally where you get your best economy so yours does sound pretty thirsty, unless you hadn't filled it to the brim [&:] My heavily modded Turbo has just done 200 motorway miles and the needle is now at the half way mark and the second half of the gauge empties slower on mine. I would let yours run down until the light comes on and then fill up as sometimes the gauge is not the most linear device in the world []

Cheers for that. I will ask the garage to have a good inspection of the areas which people say have had problems in the past. Im also not sure about the graphics but I guess I shouild own the car for longer than 4 days before making a decision!!! I dont like the badge on the wheel either. That will go soon!

It is a 1986 oval dash model which corresponds to a c-reg as far as I know.

That 'big red file' is very impressive Nick! It sort of sold the car to be honest!

I was/am a bit concerend that it has had so many owners in the past 18 months but it is 23 years old and I would expect it needs work. I love the car and will maintain it regardless. The lack of history over the past 2 years is one of the things which made me want the car more - I sort of feel its been a bit neglected of late and needs some tlc!

I appreciate the heads-up re the burning oil issue. I will mention this to redline on tuesday. When I drove her home after purschase the missus did say that there was a noticable burning smell out the back of the car. Fingers crossed!

Oh, and Im sure I will start attending the monthly meets!

My estimate re the economy so far is a very rough estimate. I filled to the brim when I bought her and im now on about 150 miles and the gauge is down to halfway. This is by doing steady driving (about 60 on the m'way)

Im hoping as you say that the second half of the gauge empties slower. My old celica was steady through the first half of the tank and the 2nd half just vanished into nowhere!

Do other people find the 2nd half of the tank goes slower?

Yeah, second half of the tank is definately slower, especially I find the last quarter lasts ages before it goes onto the red, usually get around the 400 to 450mls out of a full tank.

On a bad note I found out today that the sunroof panel leaks water and the temperature gauge is getting too high at the end of a 30 minute motorway journey. The needle got between the 3rd white line and the red line today. []

Will have to get that seen to asap. If it is the headgasket then I will cry (lots!)
