Annoying squeel

Hi there, I hoping someone might point me in the right direction for an annoying squeal from my manual gen 1 996 C4 that occurs when pulling away in 1st gear. It is quite random and at the moment fairly infrequent. The clutch is still the original having covered 74k miles but whilst 18yrs old has no apparent signs of slipping. The issue has not happened when pulling away in 2nd.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Does the squeal change when dipping the clutch? Could be thrust bearing mechanism (a re-grease may help - although requires splitting crankcase from the engine). I believe there was a revision on Gen1 clutch - RH maybe able to confirm.

Another thing I have noticed are the aluminum shields around the calipers can loosen or corrode around the steel bolts (as mine) they can start to rub or squeal. Next winter job on mine to get replaced.
 
Thanks for getting back to me Tony. The squealing noise only appears to be present coming off the clutch and not when dipping. At the moment it is only doing it occasionally although I believe it has got slightly more frequent of late. I purchased the car in May this year and negotiated the price to reflect it was still on the original clutch so had been planning to replace, along with IMS bearing over the Winter so it may be time to visit my indie for a thorough check over.

I have also experienced a bit of rub from the aluminium shields, again only occasionally but this is definitely a different issue.

If it original clutch then as you say it will need replacing soon. I would replace whole assembly plus clutch. The dual-mass flywheel can be checked too - I believe some specialists can test the tolerances. Whilst there check corrosion on pipework in the tunnel - there is a brake-line that can fail MOT or at worse start to leak, it is tricky to replace with gearbox in place. Also check RMS for oil leaks. The IMS can leak oil too, but will be changed as you say (there is a chance that oil could contaminate the clutch plate, but I suspect you would notice other problems too).

It might be worth checking/ replacing the AOS on the engine passenger side. This can start to cause irregular idle and smoke in extreme cases.
 
Thank you Tony, a great help, I will cover all those items. Car was up on the ramps for a check over at the recent Dove House 996 open day and no oil leaks were present and everything was looking very tidy underneath. Fortunately the car is very much a third vehicle for me, as it was for the previous owner so doesn't see too much wet stuff.

Whilst I cant offer a solution my car does the same and has done for the 3 yrs I have owned it. Clutch was changed 35k ago by a previous owner and all who have serviced including Hartech have said it’s not an issue. I’ll be watching the thred with interest to see if it turns up anything disasterous, which I always expect after reading the internet about 996 generation 911s ????
 
Hi Dan, Interesting to hear your experience, thanks for sharing. I will be sending it in for investigation in the new year so will keep you posted. Is yours also ok when pulling off in 2nd?

On the brake pipe replacement, I had a stainless flexible pipe made and used the original pipe to fasten it to, works great.
