Alternator removal

A little advice please, I am in the process of removing the alternator from my 1977 911sc, I have managed to remove the whole fan assembly from the car and have managed also to prize the inner fan located by the key way also from the unit.
The next fase is to remove the alternator from the outer fan unit, the unit has around 6 long allan bolts presumably holding the alternator together but are these also holding this unit to the outer fan as it appears to be solid and has no movement what so ever, could this be due to the alternator being corroded in the mounting or am I missing some form of mounting bolts, any help would be appreciated.

Cheers Baz

Hi Bazzer,
Just been looking at the workshop manual for my car 1983 911SC so it might be different for your car but anyway. The manual says:-
Remove the alternator/ cooling fan assembly which you have done.
Then:-Working on the bench remove alternator to fan housing mounting nuts, push alternator out of fan housing. This is where you are, so I don't think you are missing something, it's just that these bolts will need some persuasion.
The photo in my manual shows a nut and thread, if yours is the same and you can't undo them you might have to cut through the nut and shaft so that you can punch out the shank and head of the allan bolts, plenty of WD40 where you have cut the nuts off. This sounds like what you might have to do but not seeing the assembly for myself I can't be sure.
Can you see both ends of the allan bolt or is the threaded end of your allan bolts blind ?

If the alternator is still refusing to release from the fan once the bolts have been undone, you can lightly tap it out or preferably have it pressed out.

Cheers guy's, yes I have managed to remove the nuts and all the allan bolts will pull clear of the alternator, having said that I was not sure if by removing these bolts totaly I was about to have the alternator fly into thousands of parts across the workshop floor.
These bolts only appear to be threaded into the alternator and not the out fan unit, it appears the nuts pull the alternator tight to the outer unit.
On the info you have given I am now about to go and see a garage friend who may be able to press the two apart as knowing my luck if I try tapping the two parts the alternator will fall in pieces.

Once again an invaluable site, many thanks.

There should be six bolts (from memory) that fasten the alternator to the fan, don't undo any others. Any Porsche Independent will do this work in a jiffy for you.

Cheers for all your help chaps I have now got to the bottom of the fault with my chargeing problem, the brushes had worn out in the alternator.
I had the alternator pressed apart from the fan unit and took it to an electrical firm in Frome somerset where they have tested it and replaced the worn out parts in only one day for £36 + vat, bargain I thought!.
Many thanks for all the advice and tip's now roll on more sunshine!!!

Cheers Baz

Too late now but for the future look at.

Glad it was sorted for a reasonable price. Exactly the same thing happened to my alternator; I had the bushes replaced for a fiver while I waited!
