Lasr weekend took the 944 all the way over to Switzerland to attempt the Alpine Challenge historic and regularity rally. 750 miles down there and then 390 stage miles over Friday, Saturday and Sunday including 2 night stages on the Saturday (in the wet). Most of it above 1000m on roads where sometimes it was very interesting but best not to look down. Maggy did a great job with the road book which had one or two twists and turns in it's format, and using a kilometer based road book on the Saturday afternoon with a miles trip was quite a challenge to convert and calculate the intermediates with the car on the move.
Extremely tiring as we were starting about 9-30 in the morning and didn't finish till 7 on the Friday and Saturday, followed by night satges from 7-30 Saturday, but a short day on Sunday (when we were allowed to use the hill climb at Ollons - Villars during a break in the international meeting that was taking place) finishing a little after 4.
We stayed for the presentation which we had to wait a couple of hours for and were amazed to learn that we'd managed to get 3rd place on the Friday event, which was a preliminary event to the main 2 day event. We were even more shocked when the announcements were made for the main event as we found out that we'd actually won it!! Absolutley amazed and couldn't believe that we'd done it at our first attempt. Had to rearrange the car to get the trophies and prizes in as it was we were carrying a lot of tools and spares after our experience going to the Nurburgring earlier this year.
Came home 750 miles in 9 hours on the Monday and was shattered for the rest of the week.
The old 944 didn't miss a beat and we had grat fun chasing down a 964 and a Lancia Stratos at various times over the weekend. The headlamp motor packed up, unfortunately, but the manual override allowed us to put the lights up and down. A bit of cosmetic damage to the car, nothing major but a little bit of laquer work required and a bit of a scrape on one wheel rim, other than that, unscathed.
Guess we'll be giving the old thing a bot of a rest for a while now.
