After market rear wiper

I might be dreaming but I believe a rear wiper was an optional extra on the 987 Cayman. Does anyone have any experience/know of an outfit that can fit and supply an after market one?

I live in East Anglia so preferably would need to find a supplier there.

Many thanks,

Duncan

Hi Duncan,

I think you’ll find that the rear wiper has always been an option on all the Caymans [and the 911s too I think?]. Since it’s set-up for LHD it leaves a large unwiped area on the top right side of the screen, just where the drivers of RHD cars need it cleared … not great!

In the 16+ years that I’ve been driving my 987.2 I’ve never found it a problem not having a rear wiper, and the recessed rear window means that airflow from the roof flows over it and removes any water quickly once on the move.

I’m sure that all the parts are available for fitment by a competent garage, but unfortunately I can’t help with any recommendations. Maybe you should try using something like Rain X Rain Repellent before resorting to that?

Hi Duncan.
Yes a rear wiper was an optional extra.
I have had 3 Caymans 2 Cayman S Sports which had rear wipers my Cayman R did not personally I prefered the look of no rear wiper.
To be honest I would think a hell of a lot of work and expensive to after market fit .
Why not try coating rear window in something like a rain x product so the rain just flys off when on the move.

Duncan, you could consider buying a used tailgate, complete with wiper, from a car breaker or ebay - you may even find one in a matching colour.

This is what I would investigate. See if you can speak to someone with PIWIS to confirm you can code the wiper in and also consider that you might need a new wiper stalk for your wheel? You've also got to think about the wiring loom situation and if there is a place to tap into for the wiper left over from factory.

Definitely something you might want to find someone who has done the conversion before or has taken the wiper tailgate apart.

Personally I have owned Cayman both with and without wipers and I have to say that to me it looks better without but you will miss it if you are dailying it in the winter months. I've taken to using a small silicone squeegee to clear the rear windscreen of condensation in the mornings.

Have had my 987 for 10 years, used throughout the year in all weathers on muddy rural roads. Never felt the need for a rear wiper given that any water clears quickly when moving and the aerodynamics do not suck road dirt into the glass.

My daily driver 987 Cayman S had a rear wiper. I found it invaluable in and after rain, especially when manoeuvring in car parks. Mind you, I marvel at the number of people with SUVs who never use their rear wiper under any circumstances.

Thanks to all. I'm not going to bother, for many of the reasons people have mentioned, I too had thought things like switch gear, wiring loom etc may make it a non-starter but there is always a chance someone has done it. The only time I miss a rear wiper is setting off after or in rain before the airflow has flushed it off. The problem is made worse by a previous owner fitting almost opaque privacy film on the rear windscreen and small side windows, it's almost impossible to use the normal rear view mirror as the view is made even darker by the tinting on the mirror itself so I rely on the wing mirrors for manoeuvring. I am getting that removed by an expert soon which I think will fix all my rear view issues. Thanks & regards
