AFM Refurb, Smooth running now.

Hello

I recently decided after talking to Max at "Frazer Porsche Parts" to try and have my AFM refurbed.
He has a supplier that completetly strip and rebuild these Bosch units that our cars use.
After a recent Rolling Road Day my car was down on power and it was clear the fuelling was a little lean early
on then was overfuelling on boost.

Of course my AFM was bound to have a worn track after 22 years and a new one from Porsche is silly money.
I was thinking of a MAF but that is not a cheap option either, although I understand tha would be my prefered route
if the piggy bank was over flowing.

So off went my AFM and a week or so later I got a call from Max that it was back...

I went to collect it and then realised it was so shiny I would have to clean the rest of the engine
bay up now.[:D][:D][:D]

I fittted it today which is an easy fix.

I then took the car out for a run. Instantly on starting the car up I noticed much smoother tickover and more consistant running.

When coming on and off the gas it is much smoother. I used to notice a slight jumping occasionally when coming off the power,
I guess that was just at a point where the track was worn and the AFM would momentarily stick.

It appears to be fuelling better. Not sure if it has helped with a lost few gee gee's but I am guessing with the improved
fueling/air mixture etc it can only be a good thing.

I will try and get a better run in the week, but all I can say is I am made up.

Thumbs up from me[:D][:D][:D]

If you have a worn AFM I could really recommend this.

I am sure you can google Max if you want to try out his services.

Cheers

Max Schenker is a top bloke would reccommend him to anyone first for parts. I have his number in my mobile and he always gets the first call.

Hi 3.2 fordy

Was a very reasonable price.

Mine was the first one they have really done, so Max was still fixing the pricing,
but if you e mail him as your 3.2 may be different.

So far though seems a really cost effective way of improving the performance of your
original AFM without breaking the bank.

I will try and do some more runs in the coming weeks to update the thread here.

Cheers

Hi,

I've used Max before and he is good.

I'd be interested in the price for that refurb. It is something I am thinking about doing (although I would want to keep the car on the road, so an exchange service would be best. Sounds like this isn't what you did tho'.)

Hi Oli

I only use the car in good weather and weekends really, so could have been off the road.

I was lucky though as I am good friends with the guys at Tech 9 in Liverpool.

They kindly loaned me a 964 AFM which actually worked better than my worn 944 AFM!!!

That was when I decided to get it refurbed by Max[:D]

Swapped over and bobs your uncle, smoooooooth running[:D]

A worth while improvement.

Cheers

Your're really not going to post the price are you ? [:D]
Just what I was thinking. Two direct requests and no figures forthcoming ... [:)]

I'm guessing north of £200.

Or, for the purposes of comparing, we can do a Bosch Service Exchange AFM for the 944 turbo for £183.30 including the VAT - thats an exchange unit in a Sealed Bosch box.

Isn't it worth moving the wiper on the track before going for a refurb ?.

Ditto, I just bent the arm on my AFM slightly and made it run a slightly different track like this guide shows http://www.the944.com/afm.htm (near the bottom).

Pete, Paul, thank you. I have to say that I strongly dislike (hate actually, but that seems too strong a word) Promax's new website, but I will try to find this product there.

There was a good deal of useful reference information on the old site which hasnt been copied over to the new pages, too.

On a positive note though, a factory refurbed airflow meter for under £200 looks like a reasonable buy.

I hate it too Simon, I'd go so far as to say it must be loosing them a fortune, I for one have gone elsewhere twice to buy something purely because I couldn't find it on their site.

IMHO needs addressing urgently.
