ABS Warning Light

Im hoping someone can come up with an answer or solution to this one .
The large red warning light and the abs light intermittently appears on the dash, this happens generally after 15 - 20 minutes or a quick sprint down the motorway. What is confusing me is that a mechanic told me the car doesnt have abs its a 1990 S2. Any thoughts or ideas would be very welcome.
