ABS sensor connector problem -broken earth wire !

Started to work through ABS system to fix not -working status.Checked sensors and all give same resistance when wheels spun so seem ok.Earths on connectors look very rusted so need a good clean up.Main problem is the earth lead from the n/s strut connector has broken off.Can this be repaired , appears to be moulded into connector , or is it a replacement cable section and where does the cabling go to?

Can't be repaired and that will probably be the cause of your problem Nick. The wiring goes up through a grommet in the top of your inner wing and comes out close to the top strut mount. You will see another barrel connector that the wiring plugs in to. I should have a spare here if you are needing one.

I'm pleased to hear that it's a simple solution for you to repair (rather than pump etc) and also that I suggested this as a possible cause !

Alasdair is spot on, you're going to need a new piece of loom with an in tact connector. This will involve splicing the loom

I used a Drexel with a small grinding bit to carefully groind away the plastic from around where the wire broke off. This revealed a brass pin to which I soldered a new wire. I then used a hot melt gun to fill the plastic again..

Hey presto, good as new....

Very clever - I never thought about it but I bet that hot glue is waterproof also - should be good for quite a long time! Thumbs up!
 
Thanks Alasdair , I had a look at cable rooting today and it seems the wiring loom has a barrel connector at each end , so how were they built origionally because the hole in the inner wing is too small for a connector to pass through , do the connectors actually come apart ?
If you have a spare that would be great , and I would need to splice it into the cabling - what is the best way to do this ,I haven't done it before.

Yes the connectors do come apart, unclip the black plastic barrels and the wires just pull out - or should anyway!
 
sorry guys not explaining very well.It is the section of ABS loom from the n/s strut ,which the ABS and brake pad wear sensors plug into and it runs through a hole in the inner wing and is mounted ontop of the inner wing near strut mount.It has on each end a yellow round barrel connector/socket , about 5cm long.The cabling and earth wire appear to be moulded into one end and the other is for connectors to push fit in.

I know exactly which bit you mean - hence my original suggestion about the earth wire which bolts onto the caliper with a 10mm nut. I think from the previous post what you'd need to do is take a sharp knife to the white/off yellow/ margarine coloured barell where the earth wire ends and dig away at the plastic until the terminal is exposed.

Once you've exposed the terminal, solder in a new earth wire then fill with either epoxy resin (araldite) or the hot glue mentioned.

Hi Chris , sorry didn't respond to your post before , I thought I was missing something , but it sounds a great idea and will give it a go.Still would like to know how they built the cars with a large connector/socket either end cabled through a small hole - magic !
