About to start my bodywork.

Getting to the point I am going to tackle the grot on my S2 cab, my plan is to take the bubbling areas back with a flap disk on my grinder, assess and let metal in where appropriate, then do a temporary paint job until its all done and then take it in to get it painted by a decent painter my dad uses, so basically just so it looks presentable and protects any new metal. I am going to tackle one area at a time, starting with the bottom of the NSF wing, other areas are

Hole below the battery, near side rear
Both rear arches low down, just surface rust
Rear end of NS Sill
Bubbled stonechip on the other side, middle of the sill end panel, thats the one that worries me

Main sills look ok, jacking points fine, a camera in there suggests all is well.


So, I have, so far

Flap Disks
Mig wire (0.6)
1mm cutting disks
various magnets
fresh steel

I need to stock up on

Sandpaper, various grades
Guards red spray
Primer
Filler/Stopper
Some kind of Rust Treatment/preventor
Prayer book/Crucifix/Holy Water

Might leave it devoid of stone chip and let the body shop do that bit.

My car was repainted and the stone chip guards were never renewed, so the bits behind the rear wheels are basically free of paint where stones have sprayed up and removed it, so anyone know where to get the sheilds or a better method to protect it


Anything else ?

Get some of those clean and strip discs. You will use loads of them stripping off the underseal/stonechip, which is a right pig. Flap discs will do the job but also grind up the metal underneath.

I assume you have all the usual tools, lots of assorted clamps, mole grips etc...

See my earlier thread on fixing the rear quarter underneath the battery... I hope yours isn't as bad as mine!

I used a complete rear quarter section off a scrapper from Elliot which saved a lot of metal bashing effort. Just had to drill out the spot welds and split the panel.

Oh, and please take lots of pictures and post them on here!
 
Yes please pictures etc and keep us updated - I got the exact job in front of me on the same car a cab - . Great time to learn a bit - previous owner had a bit done before but i think its no good and need re doing.

DO NOT USE A FLAP DISC ON YOUR GRINDER to look for rust.Flap pads are for flattening welds etc.It will only thin the panel down to you get nice clean metal but it will be microns thick and totally useless. . This will eat through the rust without thinning the panel.

After you have found the holes cut the holes out at least an inch back from the side of the hole in order to insure that you will be welding back onto solid metal.
