There are normally power 2 wires into a CD player - 1 permanantly live, 1 live only when the ignition key is turned to position 1 or 2. If you have a way of checking that these are both working, then that will help. If one of the wires is dead, it's likely to be a fuse. If they're both working, it's the CD player. You must have a good earth connection, otherwise the lights wouldn't be on.

It's not likely to be an external amplifier, as that wouldn't result in the CD not ejecting.

My car plays Bowie OK, so I don't think it's that [:D]

thanks george, yes as soon as it "died" i tried lights, sunroof, windows, all are working fine, weird thing is that i am due to pick up a newish pioneer head unit on monday and have it swapped over with the old pioneer whilst car is in with mechanic on tues! jason p

My (new) Sony stopped working when it got a bit wet, (who needs a roof) no fuses blown but didn't work until I unplugged an re-plugged it from the power, been fine since.

when i fitted my sony i had to do some fiddling with the 2 lives. then it kept blowing a 3A fuse. The other live had a 5A fuse in it, and both were the same thickness; so i replaced the 3A with a 5A and put the 3A where the 5A was. its worked fine since. the stereo itsself has a 10A fuse so im pretty sure its safe.

70's bowie is fine... 80's not so much ;)
