A new noise...

I have a new noise on one of the turbos... well, two actually... When the engine has been running at higher revs and returns to idle, there is a kind of "cooing" noise... to me it sounds like a loose pulley spinning on a shaft, and not decelerating at the same speed as the engine. The second noise is when the engine is switched off, a "tinkling" noise, like some bits of tin are rattling around in a can before coming to rest.

First thoughts were a loose pulley... so have just taken the top half of the timing belt cover off to have a look, and can find nothing amiss... just wondering now if it might be a broken clutch spring? Any ideas anyone?

Having not been up close and personal with the clutch it sounds like a worn thrust bearing, could be way of the mark but just a suggestion.

The "cooing" noise is still unexplained on mine. As it's a new clutch it was deemed unlikely that it was down to that, although I'd agree that the thrust bearing is a likely candidate.

It was suggested that it could be the OPRV sticking.

Well, a sudden flash of inspiration, and I have determined the "tinkling" noise on switch-off doesn't occur if the clutch is depressed... so at least I am now sure it is to do with the clutch and not a timing belt pulley about to cause expensive damage. As I still have most of the inlet system stewn across the floor I can't rev it to see if the "cooing" noise also goes away with the clutch depressed... but for some reason I feel comforted by some-one else having the same noise! Thanks Paul! (And John... hadn't thought of the release bearing - good call).

Have now re-assembled, and tried dropping the revs with the clutch both engaged and disengaged... as per the "tinkling" noise, the "cooing" noise is not present with the clutch depressed... I initially thought it sounded like a bearing with play in it, but was thinking about the pulleys on the front of the engine, so the more I think about it, the more I suspect it is the clutch release bearing. Ho-hum... wonder how long I can get away with leaving that before it causes damage to anything other than itself?!

Talk of a 'cooing' noise reminds me of Only Fools and Horses in the 'To Hull and Back' Christmas special. Rodney needed to warn Dell if the rozzers showed up at his meeting with Boycie, Dell tries to show Rodney how to do an owl noise with his hands but ends up cooing - then says 'I can do bunny shadows!!' Cracks me up every time!

....anyway back in the room and on topic! [:D]
