Hi,
After getting a new trolley jack and jack stands I am busy cleaning the crud from behind the wheel arch liners. I also have a perished bump stop that needs replacing but see the top of the strut is corroding along with the spring and it’s got me to thinking I could have a go at replacing.( I do realise the geometry would require specialist attention) It’s a while since I did any serious work on my cars and the good old days of renewing trunnions on my TR6 And for all my other cars various projects I had a works manual (still have them) and scarred fingers ! but no Porsche 997.2. Is there a good version out there as I’ve seen some dubious offerings. Thanks.
Stuart

Hi Stuart.
Superficial corrosion on springs and in the area of the damper shaft under the bump stop is common, and rarely at risk of causing a structural failure. If its not bad i would replace the bump stop and bellows (in my opinion the Meyle kit part no. 414 640 0000 is better than the porsche one, and a fraction of the price- the bumper stops are yellow as per OEM not grey as in some internet images) and spray the spring with lanoguard.
Design 911 also sell 'OE match' parts which I suspect are febi bilstein and probably not as good as the Meyle ones- Meyle aftermarket parts are usually reverse engineered.
The removal of dampers is covered in this book:

You will need a spring compressor. Don't get cheap ones and make sure they have safety catches, and don't use an impact on on them as this destroys the threads)
However, I did download a 997 manual this week foc of rennlist- with factory workshop manuals however there is presumed mechanical knowledge/tooling knowledge so the book might be better for occasional home mechanics.

Hope that helps.

Many thanks for those links and comments. I’ve actually downloaded a workshop manual after I received a message from a person who I thought was a member but it did have a cost applied. Shame I didn’t see the free one earlier but C’est La Vie I guess??. I’m not planning on using my car a great deal more this side of Christmas so will monitor the bump stop and shocks etc, mainly because I am having to replace my cabriolet roof??. Funnily The best quote I’ve had for replacing the shocks etc seems to be less than I could actually purchase the parts at a 10% discount as a club member so I don’t see me getting my hands dirty when the time comes??. Thanks once again??
