997.2 Carrera PDK 3.6 pulley noise

Hi, just thought I’d see if anyone has had this issue.
When pulling away at low speed there is an engine noise that sounds like a pulley vibrating/squealing.
The car is a 2011 with 70k full Porsche history. PDK gearbox.

Noise seems to be infrequent. Comes and goes. Seems to happen at low speeds when getting up to around 30 to 40 mph.

Not sure if this is a common issue on the 3.6 engine.
My initial thinking is an alerternator pulley or belt tension.

Thanks for any advice advance.

Hi Andy,

I agree with Rodney that any squealing sounds are likely to come from the serpentine belt, or maybe a worn idler pulley or alternator bearing. Best to get round the back of the car with the engine cover open and have a listen while someone revs the engine to get a better idea about a potential source.

Check that the belt tensioner is free moving on the pivot. Turn the tensioner arm to release the tension and check that it returns freely. They are prone to seizing. Off the car, it may be possible to free one up with penetrating oil and moving back and fore, but a replacement tensioner arm may be the best solution.
Also visually check the hydraulic tensioner/damper unit (below the tensioner arm). If this is wet with fluid and accumulated grime, it is likely that it will need replacement.
