996 Cabrio Roof folding

Hey - I recently bought a 996 c4 cabrio where the roof had a rip.

The cause was obvious: when the hood closes away (so roof down), the folds of the hood don't fold inwards, instead they just balloon out, and the roof material snags in the latch for the lid (is that the right term - it's the plastic strip that mechanically lifts out of the way and back into place when roof stored).

New hood fitted yesterday but the same issue exists (obviously a bit disappointed the hood fitter didn't know / fix) - so current temp fix is to partially close, manually fold the hood inwards, then carefully close - not ideal and more than a bit of faff .. and certainly wouldn't work should the car ever be fitted with a bypass to allow hood closure on the move (not that I will but have seen this documented in 101 projects).

With the roof partially open, I stuck my hand inside the space between hood and the inner head lining and feels like there is a long spring at the point of the fold. So I'm guessing a 'mechanism' has broken (or something has come away) ... but I can't find anything online. It also feels like the latch for the lid is very 'exposed' and probably should have some sort of cover on it. So my questions are... does anyone know:
a) if the lid lock mechanism is supposed to have a cover surrounding it (like you would see on a hatchbacks boot) so the hood is less susceptible to snagging on it?
b) does anyone know how it is supposed to work, so that the folds of the hood fold inwards, rather than just ballooning out and snagging the catch (the sailor in me thinks that a few pieces of shock cord could do the job, but would prefer to know the correct solution)?
