993 tyres question

Need to replace fronts soon. Car is 1996 C2 Tip. Currently on Conti Sportcontact 2's all round. Tyre specialist tells me that Sportcontact 5's are approved for the car. Any thoughts on which would be preferable?

17" N rated - 255/40 ZR 17. I was told that there were none about a month ago but they were expected shortly.

Yes, the 'N' only signifies approved by Porsche and not any designated model.
AFAIK, SpoortContact5s came out just after the Classic test by Porsche anyway so will have to wait till the test comes round again.

Doubtless they would perform fine, and presumably there are some minor improvements over the 2s, but IMHO you need to decide too on what you want from the tyre to justify any extra outlay for the later ones, especially if quite a price hike for only a small difference in capability.

Again IMHO, if the improvements are only at the top end of the 'N' scale, eg 250 kmh speeds+ or when cornering in extremis, then likely you're just as well off with the 2s which are extremely capable on road as they are on track (although on the latter they shred like there's no tomorrow...[])

Maybe too the visuals will come into it for you, eg more or less symmetrical tread pattern, etc.

Or, lastly, perhaps you want to be the forum's test pilot for these 5s and report back on how they fare [:D][;)]

To clarify my meaning in the above, re 'N' rating, of course the tyre manufacturer does test the tyre on specific cars with Porsche approval, but I'm saying that the 'N' rating in itself is not a designation of Porsche model that the tyres are for.
To find out the latest information, refer to the specific tyre manufacturers' websites for the specific models that have been approved.

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 265/35 ZR 18 N3 can be added to the 993 list.

Apparently the Michelins rate very well for low road noise (couple db less than the other options)

I also like Goodyear Eagle F1s, but don't seem to come in N spec sizes
