987 2.9 Boxster

Morning all

I currently drive a gen II 2.9 boxster. I also have a 914 in the freezer (sorry its technically a garage but over the last couple of months thats what its been known as) that Im restoring (slowly).

Im hankering after a change, I cant say exactly why as the boxster is an unliveable car. Its probably too good, and personally I think it takes a bit of driving pleasure away. One of the reasons I bought the 914 to drive something simpler again.

I test drover a GT86 at the weekend and though I can see what the fuss was all about I came away thinking a) its been over designed as a 'drivers car'... exhaust sound is routed to the cabin.. skinny tyres etc. It lacked any grunt at all ... and b) the 944 probably even by todays standards is better, better built, better torque etc etc.

Ideally I should get out there and try a 944 to see for myself (either S, S2 or Turbo). Just wondered if anyone out there has had both and can comment.....am I right in thinking the 944 is a bit more engaging?

After the initial shock of stepping back what feels like some 200 years in terms of interior, kit and general whiffiness I think they are very engaging, possibly more so than any other car I have driven, but then, then Boxster is considered a proper drivers car.

You do need to try one, you may well miss the open aspect, unless you get a cab like mine, not many about and they are a bit wobblier than a Boxster in terms of scuttle shake.

The S2 is quick enough for most eventualities, but then, your budget would get you (I assume, based on selling a Boxster) a really really nice example of pretty much any 944, even the hyper rare Turbo Cab, I would say try a few.

I think you need to be more hands on with a 944 than a later car, stuff does tend to need attention, they are all ancient now, things like wonky clocks, rust, random electrical issues and all manner of stuff, its definitely more of a commitment than owning a modern one, some are perfect but most have a percentage of stuff that works versus what doesn't.

Despite owning an S2 Cab, I would say buy the best, slightly modded Turbo coupe you can find, coilovers, boost increase, well maintained and it will be a revelation, if slightly crude by modern standards, the S2 is slower but a bit more sophisticated and easy to live with.

Im happy to spend a bit of time and effort on a car. For me its more of how it drives and if I like it. Im not too fussed about having an open top. I can count the fingers on a 3 toed sloth as to the amount of times Ive had the top down.

In terms of speed Im not too fussed about that either, grunt is nice and I like being able to pull in low gears and then drop down a couple if the times right. But I just like the way certain cars feel.

Your defiantly right about trying one out its on my todo list this week.
