951 Fuel Consumption

What sort of petrol mileage are Turbo owners achieving? I read some litres per 100 kilometres figures recently which are far, far more frugal than I am achieving. From memory they were approximately 1.5 gallons used per 62 miles @ 55mph; 1.3 gallons used per 62 miles @ 75mph and 2.7 gallons used per 62 miles urban.

Summary: urban - 23mpg; 55mph - 41mpg and 75mph - 48mpg.

Im getting 17mpg! I have a nearly new/refurbed AFM and a new air filter, which Im hoping will bring some improvement, but theres a chasm between the official DIN figures and what Im getting. Not too bad in town, but on the open road the difference is massive.

Best I've ever got is 33 mpg on a long run through speed restricted road works. Normally about 22-24 round town. Have stopped calculating it now though [:)]

better fuel consumption at 75 than 55? that can't be right.

I occasionally saw 400 miles from a tankful when used on steady ~80mph motorway cruising. 300 ish in mixed driving.

5-6 mpg on trackdays though.

When I 1st got mine I was getting 28/31 mpg

That was checking the car still boosts, generally sitting at 80mph

I would miss gears and come out off gear when stoping.

Mixed driving I would say about 25mpg

If I work out mpg I normally buget 4 worse case 25 mpg best 30

MIT be worth get injectors checked

90% of my fuel consumption figures from tank brimming to tank brimming come out at 29 mpg plus or minus 1 mpg. Worst I've ever had, on a couple of tanks which were entirely used up on vigorous Sunday morning thrashes, is 24-25. That's a 250 hp Turbo tweaked up to about 300 hp.

A steady 75mph at 48mpg is either complete fantasy or a transcription error, I'm afraid.
Government figures for the 220 hp Turbo in 1986 were: urban 23.0mpg / 56mph 41.5mpg / 75mph 33.2mpg
The equivalents for the 250 hp Turbo Cab in 1991 were: urban 21.2mpg / 56mph 39.8mpg / 75mph 30.4mpg

So far I have not bettered 26MPG. I tend to get around 360 miles to a tank before the warning light comes on.

The 75mph figure does appear to be a mistake but the UC and mid speed figures are spot on. For well under 300 miles per tank Id expect to have caned it a great more!

Recirculating valve issue? A VTA valve will make the motronic run rich at cruise. Do you have a wideband fitted?

Aftermarket recirc and no lambda of any description at present. I have been meaning to fit the new AFM for ages, so I will fit that first and then take it from there.

Can anyone suggest how I should stick down the black plastic cap which has come of the airflow meter, please?

I have a spare AFM if you want to give it a try, it was a little rough at the bottom of the rev range so I changed it for another one. It made the car lots better, but didnt notice any difference in mpg.

I would use some kind of silicone sealant on the lid to stop the water getting in.

If your car came with a lambda sensor I would replace it if it's still the original one. Your car's got quite a bit of miles on it...

No Lambda sensor on mine Thom, to the best of my knowledge (yet). Thanks for the offer Tom, but I actually have a refurbished sensor ready to fit. It is on this part that the plastic cap has become detached.

I tend to get about 300-320 miles per tank full.

I am going to work out home much fuel we use next week on our Germany Trip as this should hopefully give us a variety of driving conditions over 1300 miles [:)]

Normally you should be able to retrofit one, your car being an '87 the engine harness should have the plug for it. If I remember correctly you would just need to add one of the plugs to the harness in the passenger footwell to tell the DME it's getting a lambda signal.

Not sure where you're going but a friend is organising his annual 924/944/968 meet at his workshop. It will take place on Saturday, May 4th.

There is usually about a hundred cars turning up every year.

My 290bhp 951 gets around 19 in heavy traffic/town use, 28 on "A" road blasts with some dual carriageway thrown in, and 22 in moderate traffic.

We are in Stuttgart at the Porsche factory and museum on the Friday but are travelling North to Boppard on the Friday afternoon.

Would have been good to have visited your friend but think we will struggle time wise [:(]
