Guys, does anyone make a replacement exhaust section to enable removal of the factory cat ?

Cheers, Paul

Rudds,
Git yerself down to David Yeowart, chop it out and he will replace with nice shiny stainless steel, i know you like shiny stuff [:D]

I'm pretty sure that Promax stocked such a part a few years back. Surprised you would consider changing the standard spec in view of the quality and originality of your cracking example ?

Steve, just considering a few options for a bit of Winter tinkering, car will be SORN'd from the end of this month, I would never do anything that could not be easily changed back to factory standard.

Looking at the cat removal pipes it appears the factory exhaust has to be cut to do this so probably a no no ?

I was considering fitting over Winter

Cat removal
K&N filter
Bilstein Suspension Kit front and rear
Goodridge Black braided brake hoses
New clutch master and slave cylinders (precautionary)

Very nice Paul. Personally I'd leave the exhaust alone.

Suspension is a great game changer as you know so well worth. You really need to do two things;

A) borrow my car for a weekend and challenge yourself to get the paintwork shining like yours(!)

B) restore the original wheels and offload those ugly ones [:D]

Best wishes with the work. Bilsteins are a good choice I think especially in view of the prices of some others kits.

You can buy a non cat silencer from Porsche which the early cars came with (it should bolt straight it;I shall let let others confirm), but cheap it is not (IIRC it was over £300 4 years ago!).

My car cam factory standard without the cat and I've just had my exhaust system replaced the other week got it from just below the manifold back by longlife. Might be a my imagination and wishful thinking but the car seems to breathe easier and sounds normal idling but has an even nicer burble when its used.

My S2 had a std non cat middle silencer and I swapped it for a straight through pipe with a Dansk rear box.Sounded awful so swapped back to std non cat silencer and happy again.

I don't think you can get Bilsteins for the later cars - you can get front inserts for early struts which have a threaded cap, but the later struts need machining to accept inserts. I know Olli S in Finland has done some of these so might be worth contacting. Apart from that, can't go wrong with Bilsteins [:)]

Ed,

That's precisely my understanding as well, although I'd forgotten about the Olli S option.

Yes, Bilsteins are superb. Not sure how stiff the 944 ones are (they are usually fairly firm.) Given that you have reminded me of this, I think I'll be going this route when I need some new shocks on my S2. [:)]

Oli.

I had assumed this was an Olli S type scenario. Although there are some Bilstein kits around inc the Cup kits but didn't think this was what Paul was thinking.

Paul, Olli is sending stuff to me in the next couple of weeks so there is a chance carriage could be cheaper if you get them at the same time as my stuff is posted.

There are a few companies listing front/rear Bilsteins for the S2

http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt65_710_-cma81-cmo123-ct307/Porsche/944-1982-91/944S2-3-0L-1989-91/Bilstein-SPORT-B6-Dampers/

Perhaps they aren't the hard competition type Bilstein but rather an improved version of a standard set up, doesn't say anything in the ad' regarding requiring modification and the year suggests its for later cars.

On another note the car sailed through its MOT this morning and is now tucked away until next year.

Cheers, Paul

Thanks Paul, that's interesting. The insert for the front, when listed on it's own (second listing) specifies that it's only for 'Boge, bolted struts'. However in the first listing (the package) then there is no such a restriction.

Either way, it looks very like an insert which would mean you'd need the strut with the removable cap.

Oli.

Oh, almost forgot, the centre exhaust (non cat) is available from Porsche, however it too requires cutting of the original cat section, a sleeve is also required to weld to the original and a wiring loop for the sensor.

The exhaust is £575 + vat
The sleeve is £14.83 + vat
The loop is NLA

Plan B, leave original exhaust in place !!

Cheers, Paul

...not everything you read on the internet is correct of course...

It's definitely an insert, therefore it needs some machining work to make it fit the original strut. Not that it's a problem if you can find someone to do the work for you.

interesting thread as I am going to replace the front suspension as it feels a little floaty and sloppy .The rear is fine , it was all replaced only 25k miles ago with std OPC supplied parts. What type of machining is needed to use the Bilstien front inserts ?
What are the thoughts on springs mine still has origionals and 180k miles on the clock. Is it more likely the springs are shot rather than the struts ?How can the springs be teated ?
Can the strut mounts be rebushed and new bearings fitted if there is play ?
