I have had for some time a knocking noise, that when sitting in the driver's seat seems to be coming from the top right hand side of the engine. It was initially very faint hardly noticeable over the sound of the wife talking (only joking dear) I mean the radio but recently has got more noticeable. The sound is intermittent only occurring when accelerating through the gears and stops when cruising in 4/5 gear. It is not noticeable when I rev the engine on the driveway, needless to say It's not currently being driven.

It is not a tappet sounding noise more of a knock

The belts have been done and the oil pressure is as it should be.

I have read through the other threads and searched the net and am thinking that I need to check the chain and tensioner.

I have read that the tensioner guides perish but would chain need to be replaced?

I would appreciate any advice as I am keen to work on her this weekend to get her back on the road.

Cam chain, its in the center off the head under the raised cross in the cam cover. I was told by the merchainc I brought my S from that's just how they sound. I removed the camcover 2 paint it and noticed there was groves in it from contact with the chain.

Quite easy 2 remove. 5.5mm or 5 mm Allen key. Get a fresh on on a wench. Be carefull not 2 snap any bolts there £16 each. Don't over tighten them without a TQ wrench. If u snap one you MIT need 2 drill it out. Not good.

The guilds start white, then go orange then brown. Shouldn't get brown. Change them b4. Top and bottom

Chain is cheap £20

Chain is cheap £20 should be replaced if it not been all ready.

Mine had tensioner replace 70k and chain was stretch but 110k

Hi Does sound like the camchain, the tensioner itself is usually reliable but the pads can break up, leading to problems.

If the pads are yellow /brown it is likely they haven't been changed and as the chain is not on the service schedule, I would expect to change it too.

I would also have the teeth closely inspected for wear.

If it is the cam chain / Tensioner then DO NOT drive until replaced, if it breaks it will destroy the head!
Ask me how I know!

Thanks for all of your replies, I think that as long it is just the tensioner I will be OK but to replace the chain is beyond my capability. I have spoken to a specialist garage who has given me a reasonable price to inspect and report on the condition of the chain and tensioner. It was suggested that due to age and mileage I may have to replace everything, chain, tensioner and cam shafts. Let's hope that it's ok when I open her up!!!

I would think the cams are fine, mine had 160k on them and were fine until the pesky chain guide came adrift! Not sure you should be talked into replacing the cams at around £500 each!

I replaced the original chain after 185k miles and the cam sprockets were fine... no problems since. I think it's difficult to justify pre-emptive replacement of the cams unless they are seriously worn (hook shaped teeth) or teeth are missing! After all, the chain, cams, tappets, tappet bores all wear together... you need to draw the line somewhere!

It is encouraging to hear that everything was ok on your car at that mileage, I guess the garage were talking about worst case and best practice, unfortunately I am not in that market. I will only know when I get the cover off, other than the cover gasget are there any other seals or gaskets that may need replacing?
