944 Turbo Tuning and Data Logging

This might be of some interest to those interested in tuning. I have been data logging my first fiew journeys in my 944 turbo which is fitted with a re-mappable DME that I have been working on. Many of you might have followed it over the last couple of years. It's been a lot of work but finally sitting in my 951 and hearing that turbo spooling has really made it seem worthwhile! It has 55lb injectors, dual port wastegate, hybrid K26/6 turbo, head ported and internals balanced and of course my MAP based DME.

You can view them with megalogviewer http://www.tunerstudio.com/index.php/megalogviewer which is a free download http://www.tunerstudio.com/downloads/MegaLogViewer_setup_v3.1.1.exe. I started tuning it from scratch and at each stage I have done a bit of tweaking then logging then more tweaking. I am using a sensor clamped to the tail pipe so some times at low rpm you get high AFR's due to reversion. But actually this new innovate motorsport AFR clamp is pretty good. The car is now road legal here in the UK. Tomorrow I will be installing an EGT sensor into the crossover pipe which will plug into the DME and tonight I will write some code to do closed loop AFR control with the wideband input.

Third trip (maps are just modified from experience road tuning): https://sites.google.com/site/tomsite1234/files/944%20Turbo%207.11.2012%20%28Second%20tune%29.csv?attredirects=0&d=1

The car is running well, smooth and responsive. Not really venturing much into boost at the moment although I could not resist on the odd occasion :D. She needs running in for a few miles a good checkover and an oil change and then a trip to the car treadmill I think :D. I will keep updating this with new logs and hopefully eventually some dyno charts :D.

well anyone that can "write" codes for thier own tune-able ecu in my book is very clever indeed ...wish i can do that as then i would not need to spend all my pennies on these so called pro tuners/mappers !!

Look forward to that, have to say the programming is way over my head, but the idea of a clean sheet ECU and improved processing performance is exciting.

keep up the good work

Thanks, but its certainly the case of having the right skillset and the right support as well. I certainly could not have done this without the help of a number of people! If you fancy having a go at programming there has never been a better time the tools and equipment that is cheaply available is simply fantastic and the web is a phenomenal resource.

I has just been great to build something like this where you can just say right I want to do this now and have the platform to do it. The code is all written in C and is nicely commented and modularised so I can easily add new features. So I will soon be writing closed loop AFR control and then some code to monitor EGT's and so on. Its very rewarding now but it was a steep learning curve both in understanding the subtulties of engine managment (don't know it all yet though) and understanding in great deal how the processor works. I am most pleased with the tuning software. I made it with the help of a friend which was good fun and its a little different to most. I will post a video soon, really interested to see what you lot think.

Thanks George, so pleased with the way the car is running. It's very responsive and combined with balanced internals and smooth ignition control the engine is like silk. Can't wait to properly get into boost :D.

So what are you using to control the boost ...is it the ecu or the Apexi Avc-r.

On my Impreza P1 I have a motec m800 controlling the avc-r which in turn controls the boost

Didnt I read that the ECU controls the boost with an output to drive a servo, so incorporating an EBC function too?

Yes 944man.......but you can also set the Avc-r to control boost as well if yr ecu do not (but most will use the tune-able ecu to do so )

I've been running it up to about 1 BAR this weekend. Holding about 11.5:1 but the ignition is pretty retarded for now. Still pulls though, I'd forgotten how quick these things are. Pulls 1bar of boost by about 2500rpm in 4th and is easily on boost by 3000rpm when you plant your foot in 2nd. I had forgotten the joy of the 2nd gear overtake in these cars :D.

Interestingly due to a 'minor' mis-configuration of the MBC, early on the car hit 1.7 bars of boost. Luckily the ECU fuelled it correctly and retarded the ignition but damn did that thing pull! The car actually had no KLR installed and was running on a N/A DME so I'm really glad I built over-boost protection into the ECU and setup the ignition and fuelling maps up to 3bara!

Heading to the dyno next week and we will see what she can do. I'm thinking of mapping it up to at least 1.4 bar, she won't hold that to the redline but she certainly will in the mid range. Fun times ahead! Going to fit the car with a wasted spark pack and its got an adjustable cam gear so we will play with that on the dyno too.

In a year's time when this is all sorted, bugs ironed out and I've got some toy funds back in place thus is exactly what I want to be doing to mine. Let's hope the price doesn't double!
