944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

What a lot of work, but you seem to be enjoying it and having fun! Results so far look encouraging. I'm interested to know how those big brakes feel, as I am struggling to imagine brakes being any better than what I currently have with your old set-up. Are you still standard on the rear?

My car stands on its nose now with a lovely progressive pedal, and so far I haven't triggered the ABS, even in the wet. I know it works as it used to cut in regularly even with half-hearted wet braking. An almost inoperative front caliper however would explain that.....................

How satisfying that must be after all the drama. Brilliant result with more to come - after 46 pages of bloody minded determination. A great story.

Congrats for all the hard work, especially how you remained stoich with the recurring oil leaks. I can't wait to hear how you get on and excited to hear how much it will make once fully tuned.

Stuart - I was pretty much in the same mind frame as you about the bigger brakes especially as I did not want to increase unsprung weight but really the car has so much more power with that sort of engine that the bigger brakes become a necessity, and once you become accustomed to the power and drive the car at its natural pace they end up feeling not a lot more powerful than the M030's, at least with std pads.
Good point about the bias - I did fit the 928 GTS bias valve to increase power to the rear brakes, and the car feels just fine under heavy braking now.

Good news about the ABS, what are your impressions of the new uprated front brakes?

Hard to say really - will probably know once I get it on the track. When I did have to stamp on the anchors they bit well and were easy to modulate without locking up.

You get the dyno print out at the end of the day. When I actually make it to the end of a dyno day then you’ll be the first to see it I promise!

Considered the 928 GTS bias valve too but holy moly they know how to charge for them - £££££££

I have Mintex race/fast road pads, and I have to say, they are awesome with rebuilt M030 calipers and all I need in the land of 8 valves. Get your point about serious power upgrades and the need for larger stoppers though.

After getting used to 370 mm discs on one of my daily cars, and tyres that are all done by 2k miles on bikes, you can't have too much of either IMO.
 
I’ve been putting the miles on and just enjoying the drive recently. I still need to get back on the dyno to finish things off but work has been pretty busy.

I am quite blessed for a surfeit of excellent roads near me, they’re pretty photogenic too:

Also received my Chinesium version of a Tial 50mm BOV.

Pulled it all apart and checked it over, regreased it and reassembled with a 12psi spring from Mamba Racing. £16 for the spring and only £20 for the BOV delivered. If it’s terrible then I can fit a genuine one on the same flange but for 10% of the price it’s hard to see how the Tial is over £200 better! Dropped the bits of with my fabricator to weld the flange on and also check the valve and parts for tolerances, etc. Big thumbs up from them so far. Should be a good upgrade for the 25mm Forge valve given all the extra airflow I’m moving now.

If you really have to fit one of those please at least repaint it in orange... 😜

Do they really work "better" than the std unit? I don't seem to have any issue with the std size Forge and we may be flowing about the same...
