944 Turbo - now with pics of my new car !

Hi All - my first post here but Im told this is THE place to talk 944 Turbos !

Owned a 993 previously but have been looking out for another Porsche but Im on a budget - tried to stretch to low-end SC's but thats not going to happen (too many ropey ones around) ..

So the other car that has always attracted me is the 944 Turbo ..

Anyone have any general wisdom on these ? On a budget limit (prob up to 6K) so Im guessing this will only make a 2.5 car .. feel free to point out any currently on the market that look good !

Unless modified all 944 Turbos are 2.5 ? . As for 6000 being a limited budget , despite what some folk would like to be the case , 6000 is well near top money for a 944 turbo these days. Enjoy your search. Mas

Admittedly, I maybe in the "despite what some folk would like to be the case" category, but I don't think that £6k is anywhere near top money now. A quick look on pistonheads for example shows that of the 14 cars up for sale 10 of them are well over £6k (£10k being the highest), 3 are there or there abouts and one odd one is only £3.5k. The most recent one actually sold would appear to gone for £8,495 - although that was a 1988 Turbo S. As I said, I obviously have an interest in seeing higher prices - and Ferdie will probably be up for sale this year but I'll be expecting much more than £6k. Talking the prices up doesn't help the OP of course, but I do think we need to stop talking the prices of our own cars down!

For 6k there should be a good up to date turbo 220 or 250 available. There is one on here today for a bit over and not sure how old the belts are, looks ok but as its had little use recently, would need a bit of fettling probably so looks a bit over priced . Main things are the sills and belts, don't get too Hung up on the mileage even lightly nodded 250 ones are good for over 200k.

Graham I have no problem with folk disagreing with me but asking prices are not in the least bit relevent. Especially in 944's they are often nothing but dreamers and people trying ( I dont blame them) to falsely push offers up by setting an unrealistic asking price. I can actually support this its not just an opinion , there is currently a car for sale in white for 4,000 on P.H , its for sale of a club forum for 3500 and the owner has offered it to two people I know for less than 3,000 in the last three days. Thats fact not my opinion. Lots of folk of Pistonheads ask 6,500 then go down to 5500 then down again and so on. Asking prices for cars are like asking prices for houses , meaningless. Yes i saw that one looks interesting ... does give me hope that I can find a reasonable car at £6K thanks ...I have another lead on a local '86 car on at 5,700 that I will be following up too ...

I know asking prices can be misleading and the car may actually sell for less but look how many are £8k, £8.5k, £9k etc. The turbo S was £8,495 and is sold - ok maybe it went for a bit less but not £2.5k straight off! Also, I can't see a white turbo for £4k - do you mean the £3.5k one I mentioned - or is it a non-turbo? No matter what, I still say we should not be actively running down the prices of out cars.

Prices are definately on the up for 944 turbos and I would need north of £7k to tempt me to sell mine which is by no means perfect. For that money though you would expect the car to be running well, big jobs done and bodywork decent. My car falls into that bracket. I think we will see some 5 figure prices for really nice ones this year. Stuart

It is possible to get a perfectly okay turbo for £6k, but not a top notch one. A nice white turbo sold recently for about £11k (by 4Star Classics), so certainly good ones can cost north of £10k. I spent about £10k on servicing, repainting and lightly modifying mine last year, and if I was to sell it later this year (not that I plan to) I wouldn't want to take less than £8k. As much as some (generally not turbo owners themselves!) may wish to say otherwise, it's hard to find really good cars below £6k - and certainly not ones that have no rust, new tyres/brakes/belts/water pump/filters/bushes/gaskets and all the other things that need doing on these 20 year old cars. £6k can buy an enjoyable, decent turbo. Just not one that would to my personal standard.

There is a white 86 220 turbo on e-bay that is back for sale at around 3500 (sold originally for 2750 but the last bidder didnt follow through on it) that sounds like a nice car (I nearly bought it but the wife reined me in) and the seller seems a decent chap in correspondence I had with him.

Hi guys, as you probably all know, i bought a very nice example last September from a chap in scotland who only owned it for eight months. He said he "could'nt get on with it" and " it's a bit twitchy at the back end". Cnut probably didn't know how to drive it! It is absolutely immaculate and, is worth probably double the £4,200 what i paid for it. It is in almost showroom condition and goes like a jet fighter!! Looks great in black too! It has done just over 180 thousand but, you would never be able to tell. Jon Mitchell tells me he has a customer who's 944 turbo has over 400k on the clock and several customers in the 300k's!! So, don't let high mileage examples put you off. They are very low compression and therefore bomb proof! Good luck in your search mate, i'm sure you'll find a good one for the right money in the end.

Do not get hung up about 220 / 250 Turbos a lot of the 220's seem to be in better order generally and can still zip along, a few quid and 260 bhp is easy, a 944 (3.0 16v, turbo running gear) Racecar at Oulton last week was substantially quicker than a lot of the 911 stuff. A well sorted Turbo with good suspension and tyres is still to this day quicker than a lot of stuff including modern day "performance cars" Seriously undervalued at the moment.

I agree with Graham about a group like ours not talking prices down...[&o] My points on subject discussed are,there are cars,and there are cars..a huge span of car quality now these cars are the ages they are,some lowish milers that have been super cared for and cars left out on the drive run on a shoestring. My last point would be that you only need one person to buy a car, for every ten people that think your car is over priced it will be one persons shangri-la if it's a good car. I went to sell a car on pistonheads recently for super top money and had loads of people saying how ridiculous the car was priced,I had a guy from London ready to buy not discussing price chomping on the bit,I decided to keep the car in the end.My ex race car sold for 15k within a week last year,an 88 turbo. Great cars fetch top money with the correct marketing approach,duff cars don't,not all apples are the same..Prices are on the move I have been watching for fun, also the Asian market is buying up all manner of Porsche,prices are on the climb compare today's with two years ago, some people have not realized that yet though.Prices going up makes big bills easier to swallow,I won't fight that,that's for sure.

The supply of turbos for scrap is definitely on the decline as I get offered far less of anything than I did a year ago. As stated before, £6k will get you a driveable car that is usuable, you will need to pay more than that for a minter. Alasdair
