944 Tacho Wiring

I'm working on a VW but it's got VDO Porsche instruments. The Tacho is not wired up and the back of the tacho has 3 terminals. I know these are for +12V, Earth & Signal, but it appears the gauge has been altered in some way, as duct tape covers the whole of the back of the casing. The terminal position doesn't match any illustration or photo I can find, so any chance anyone here knows whether it looks like it's from a Porsche? Was told it was early 944 - check out the attached pic:

I can always dismantle the unit to check where the wires go on the circuit board, but I'm just trying to work out what's been done to this, so thought finding the origin of the unit is the first step. The other gauges (speedo and combination gauge with fuel/temp needles, charge/fuel low level/high beam/indicator/oil pressure/parking brake lamps) both match the early 944 docs I can find using the 'net).

Thanks for any hints as to its origin!
 
No need for help on this now thanks....turns out the inside of the tacho is not original, so I'm now looking for an unknown tacho's wiring setup. Will be stripping it out to see where the connectors lead....
