944 starter motor?

Hello!

We have a 944 S2 track car and everynow and again after being out on track it won't start, (had problems with the immobiliser in the past, but they were fixed), it will run absolutely fine but if we stop it then go back to it it won't turn over, it has power but when you turn the key it just clicks once without firing.

However...it seems that if we put it in gear and rock it back slightly it seems to free off and start. Could it be the starter motor sticking? Or has anyone else had a similar problem?!

If you mean it clicks but the starter motor doesnt even attempt to crank the car , that is a classic description of a starter motor/solonoid fault ( or battery/connection fault).

However if you have the "I can rock it in gear then start the car" ths points to a likely diagnosos of wear to the internals of the starter /solonid and by moving it round ( rocking) you help it make contact. I recently cured this on a rover with a solonoid repair kit for 12 pounds but I'm not aware of this being easily available for 944's ?

I changed the starter on my last turbo as I advertised it and it suddenly played up on me. I couldn't be happy to sell the car after it did that so had a new one quickly put on, only to find out that the old one was fine ( it was a dodgy external wiring connection) .

Mine did NOT have the rock it and it will go that you have, mine just suddenly refused full stop all be it once only.

Hi Mas,

sorry for the delayed reply! we've got a track day coming up so going to see how it goes then, if it happens I'll be taking careful note of the rocking and the effect it has! I'll let you know how it goes.. may have a look at connections as well before we head off!
