Is yours a 4-speaker or a 10-speaker model? If you're interested, I have the 4-speaker Alpine set that JMG sell, new and unused, and would be happy enough to move them on at a substantial discount. These are selected by JMG to be direct plug-in replacements.

I have those alpines in front and they are a long way from what i would call quality ,good mids very lacking in bass and highs. I will replace them soon with 4" polks.
In the back i have 4x6 polks and they are 10x better with very good sound quality allround.

Don't know how much in stores ,i got them NOS from someone in US.
ps: if someone wants my alpines i will let them go for 15£ ,they are 4 months old.

Very interesting that this should come up just as I am thinking about changing out the speakers in my 10 speaker setup (currently from the range made by those audiophiles... Nokia..)
I've been looking to try and get some direct replacements, going with either Infinity Reference or JBL, not the GTO range though (both I know from the Harman stable but aimed at different levels - Infinity being approx 2xJBL). I'm thinking of the following setup, I haven't done a huge amount of research right now but would appreciate any thoughts you might have:
Front
5.25" Components (with x-over)
4" 2-way
Rear:
6.5" Components (with x-over)

I took the advise of a local ICE specialist and bought Rainbow 6x4 inch two way speakers (KX 9 x 15) to fit the front doors. They protrude more than the standard speaker, so you will need 968 speaker covers as these give the required additional clearance.
They do sound a lot better than a pair of Kenwoods i had fitted as an upgrade of the OEM speakers. The Kenwoods were from their "HQ" range and featured poly pro cones and soft dome tweeters.
I was told that these speakers were the best sounding pair that would fit the standard mounting position. The owner of the ICE business is a national judge for ICE competitions and so I trusted his judgement.

HiFi in a 944. A topic that I love and hate in equal measure ...
Kongsodoken - that looks like a great install you have there. It must sound good - I'm glad you are pleased with it. You put a lot of effort in and it shows - good stuff!
My reservations with HiFi in a 944 is weight. Good HiFi is heavy - no two ways about it. Big lumpy bits of electronics, heavy sound deadening, very heavy MDF. The loss of performance, bulkier handling and poorer fuel consumption are all the price you pay for having good sounds. I know that anything is a compromise - with Peter Empson's very light racer as uncompromised as you can get, at one end of the scale. I put some half-decent JBL speakers in the front doors of my S2, a nice headunit and a very good (but very small) amp. It sounds much better than a standard 944, but even as it is I wonder whether I would do better losing the kilo or so of amp ... but then, I could lose several kilos of seat as well and fit some lightweight buckets. And also lose several kilos of sound deadening from under the carpets. And what about a can of tyre foam instead of a spare wheel? Decisions decisions ...
In terms of speaker, the 6x4 size is very compromised. Paul, those rainbow speakers will be great for a 6x4 (and must have cost a fortune), but I suspect that changing to a set of components (4inch round speaker and a small tweeter, with a crossover) will bring bigger improvements for a much lower price. But then you need to cut holes in your door card to make them fit ... decisions decisions again. What do you compromise?
I'd be interested to know what other people have done with the speakers and head units in their 944's. Do post up pictures, if you have them - thanks.

Weight is not a major issue to me I just enjoyed doing it[
].....although the base MDF is very thin the Thick stuff on the top is mostly cut away I have not weighed it but as a guess I would say the whole system is about the same as the weight of the jack,spare wheel and boot carpet...all of which have been removed[].....hope I don't get a flat tyre!

In a sports car all you want (imo) is a nice HU, uprated front ovals, and a sub/amp.
I removed the spare wheel and bracket and made one of these.

However because the box is to small for my (much cheaper than on the website) subwoofer low end dies off and it's very 120Hz (guess), but you can sort of sort this with loads of EQ.
