Now that's all wrong, a huge amount of money for a kit-car bodge-up

But.....

£20 million-plus for a proper GTO, and it's not going to be as good to drive as the 944 with a beautiful bodykit. Viewed that way it might be a bargain. [8|]

I'd still go for the S2 estate if I had the budget though.

As a classic car enthusiast I dislike replicas intensely. They devalue the real thing. Nowadays when I see a Cobra or GT40 on the road or pretty much anywhere else for that matter I assume it's a fake until I am told otherwise and that's sad. The real cars are special, in part because of their rarity and high value. If you can't afford one, then that's sad but life's reality is that we often can't afford the things we want. Learn to live with it.

Leaving all that aside, this is a bad replica. The general shape is there but the proportions are all wrong.

December Excellence magazine (North America) has a 986 boxster s re-bodied as a 550 spyder. Re-skin original body with metal panels. I don't recall seeing money discussed (must be significant) but I can't see this being a popular conversion and not likely to be made available as a "kit" as the original body panels must removed to fit the new ones. Lots of fitting and welding and metal finishing.

I agree with Glen about the loss of uniqueness to the originals - I stumbled upon what appeared to be an original Cobra at a local car show (if it wasn't original - the effort to replicate the AC based Cobra was beyond imagining). It seemed only me and another child of the 50's realized it wasn't a kit car - the rest of the crowd paying no more attention than they would to any other street rod - assuming it was fiberglass. It was truly a shame...

I'm no Ferrari expert and to me it looks great in the pics, though it probably looks very wrong to an aficionado.

Hoever I bet the engine note is woefully inadequate compared to a real one [&o]

I was once told that they never made original Cobra's in RHD form, hence any RHD one is a repro. Given that pretty much every kit version in the UK is built as a RHD, it somewhat gives the game away ...

Oli.

I must admit I dont usually go for the replica cars with the exception perhaps of the GT40, at the Le Mans Classic I think there was only one actual original GT40 there all the others being replicas or re-builds of sorts. They also all did pretty well in the race and perhaps goes to show that they can be considered a legitimate car in its own right.

If you can get 95% of a $11,000,000 car that won Le Mans 4 times for £80,000 then why not? So what if its not the original as long as it drives well and feels special?
