944 replacement keys

Lo all. does my 85 turbo use chipped keys ? Or is it just a case of getting a new key cut.
I have no idea when key transponders came about in truth.

My '89 turbo was just a standard key. I bought one on eBay and my neighbour - a locksmith - cut it in a couple of minutes.....
 
Theres a locksmith shop online thst cuts them forr 11 quid all in too
Which sounds promising, i wanted to check they arent chipped :(
 
They arent chipped, they are the same as a VW Golf, should have change from a fiver for an aftermarket one, £26.00 for a Porsche one with the light & crest on
 
My 91 S2 uses a regular key - got blanks and new lighted key heads off Pelican Parts - local locksmith cut the keys - all good and not too expensive.
 
924 and series one 944 keys certainly were the same as Mk1 Golf keys, and whilst the ignition switch differed, the steering lock and ignition switch housing was common too.

 
My 19881/2 Turbo had the same style lock barrels and key shape as my Mk 1 Golf as the door handles are the same too [;)]

If you lose the keys or your keys are well worn you can still buy brass tumbler kits and with a bit of playing around with a set of tumblers and a tweezer you can 'programme' the original barrels/cylinders to suit a new key with ease (and patience).

Thats brilliant if like me you have a 'two key' car anyway, sound sa veryt good idea indeed.

I knew you could do that wirth a Chubb lock etc but not with a car lock.

One thing I know that I dont have in abundence ( i.e at all) though is patience for fiddly jobs [;)]

How many positions are there in a conventional automotive lock? Im sure that its less than the ten found in Euro-type locks.

In the past Ive made locks to keys in the manner than Paul describes, and its not as bad as it sounds. Its easier, the more old locks you have, though.
 
You can buy a set of brass tumblers for not a lot of money - enough to do all your locks and therefore dont need spare cylinder barrels [;)]
 
Yes, but I was using the brass stampings out of the old locks. In the mid-nineties it was a lot harder to find parts and alos to find information.
