944 Pricing

Last year I sold my '89 Turbo. I wish I hadn't really as it was a good example. I didn't advertise beyond a month or two in the pcgb magazine as I was a bit half hearted about selling.

Now driving a 968 and very happy with it.

I genuinely expected to start to see a firming of price for good 944 models and some quick sales this summer.

However, there are a few cars on the various forums which all appear pretty good and yet don't appear to be moving quickly? What's the market really like ? Btw - I'm all for talking values UP but what's the reality?

Steve, I think the problem is there aren't a lot of 'good' ones about, the £4k - £6k cars are a minefield , I know because a good friend has viewed several of these price range cars over the last few weeks and they have been in the main very very rough.

A black S2 viewed last week had sills of sponge yet had just received a new MOT, when my friend pointed this out and also stated that he was VOSA approved his deposit was returned quickly.

Then there's the ones with hidden history, several have come back as Cat C, damage repaired but no mention in the advert, always carry out a thorough HPi not a 99p one.

Many have no maintenance history or are selling because everything is due replacement, but try to make out it isn't required 'just yet'.

Many the sellers don't return calls or emails.

Having seen what he's been through to find a 944, if yours has original unwelded bodywork, A1 mechanicals, clean interior , full history and in a decent colour/trim combination then hold on to it or price it accordingly, there are people looking for them.

Wise words Paul. Can you expand on what you mean by "clean interior"? Does a run round with the henry suffice or is it about more than that?

I think some people have tried to slip stream the air cooled 911 price increases of that era with the 944 pricing of late. There is a nice silver rose now for sale at £8.5k which was originally close to £13k a few mths back when it first went in sale. Definitely rather pay a bit more for a real gem. 944s can cost serious money if u don't buy the right one and its money you just won't recoup come sale time though some people try.

What about the s2 cab newly listed at 25 large, makes the white turbo cab at 11 look decent value now, what did that start at?

I recall it started at a similarly high number. Have to be insane to pay £25k for a 944 given what else is available at that price pt

The turbo cad was 14k then 12k then 14k and now 11. Ive seen it and I wouldn't pay 7k !! And 24k for an s2. Not in a million. There is a red turbo cab that looks nice in the photos for 10,500 with 50k on the clock but has been on before and not sold.

Thanks Andrew - yes I don't think it's too far off on price and sills etc are not at all rusty/rotten. I've been surprised too - in 4 months I've had 3 calls leading to 3 viewings but otherwise no interest whatsoever.

The problem is it's very much a buyers market and there are probably no more than a handful of genuine buyers out there who want a 944. As always the right price is the one at which the car sells at any given time. It's fine to start high as you can always come down until you get some bites.
