944 Oil leak

Front crack seal is always a regular fail point, if it is that seal then investigate it now before you end up with a snapped belt covered in oil!!!

I'm new to 944 ownership and generally I'd say my cars a good one! But I have quite a leak from the front of the engine. It's coming from somewhere from the oil filter housing or crank main seal just can't see?
I don't want to have to remove the cam housings unless I have to as the belts were done before bought it.
Is there a comon fault in this area or do I have to just strip it all apart until I find the exact problem?
any help would be great.

Sorry - don't mean to highjack this thread but it does raise a question. Is it safe to reuse belts with a couple of years and low mileage if you have to remove them for a repair like this? Of course the 4-5 years and mileage would still dictate a change from the original replacement but I'm curious if reusing a belt within its service interval is considered good practice. Thank you.

I was having that debate with the chap at the workshop where the car is? Do I change the belts if their only 8 months old? From what I've seen people suggest doing them every three years or so whatever the mileage, if that is the case I might as well put new ones in if there ok for five years then I'd use the old ones again. I've been looking in the book regarding the crank oil seal and not totally sure how many parts I'll need to order to get it all back togeather. I can't see if the oil seals to the balance shaft are in the cam housing or block?

My last oil filter used to leak gently around the seal. Once I did the oil and filter I thought I had cured all the oil leaks as underside was dry for a week. I knew I had a leak before and I suspect the filter seal gave up and this leaked instead as the original leak came back. I suspect the oil pressure sender. One of the problems is that oil is so damned messy that it can be hard to work out where it is coming from.

Perfectly acceptable to reuse good belts.

Another piece that leaks in the area you described is the oil pressure sender............ask me how i know, finally got it nipped up as it is a PITA to get at, leak sorted !!!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to order a new oil filter and go with the simple fix of this or the oil pressure sender. If thats not it I might drop the front sub frame (change the bushes whilst there) to really get a good view of whats going on.
