944 not a classic?

Why is it that so many porsche owners look down their noses at the 944? It seems to be catching, ' cos even Porsche fail to acknowledge the model on their ' classic' page: the 924 makes though.

Neil,

The link you posted will not work for me but if it' s what I' ve seen elsewhere the " Classic" classification has a lot to do with the age of the car. That' s why the 924 is in but not the 944. It' s something like 20 years from the models introduction but not sure on that one.

I think it might be 25 years, for the classic status (the 944 was 20 last year).

However I have never experienced the 944 being looked down on by other Porsche owners. The newer cars often don' t return a headlight flash, but I think that is down to lack of recognition (of the older cars) by the owners who may not be as enthusiastic about the marque as most porsche Club members.
Since I have owned my Turbo I have had a number of owners of the newer models come over and chat to me and say that the 944 Turbo was the best car they ever owned.

The 924 was only included on the porsche classics section last year so the 944 has a few years to go yet before it gets included.

As with reconition i found when i owned a 924 i got waves from nearly all other 924' s i passed, but now i have a 944, other owners tend not to even acknowledge me especially the S2 drivers.

I also found that the worse snobbery i got when i owned my 924 was from 944 drivers, when at castle coombe for the porsche day the owners of 911' s were really nice to me as they saw my car was cheap but at least it was a porsche and not an XR3i.

I not a rich guy and cant afford a 944 turbo or S2 but i love porsches and would be happy with any one of them on my drive. Hopefully one day i might be in the market for a classic 911.

Sorry to hear that - I do not look down on the earlier models - they are different, better in some ways, not as good in others, I would still have one (or more) of each if I had more time and money! [:)]

From the Porsche website:

For us, classic cars are the models 356, 912, 914, 924 and 959 and the 911and the 928 up to 1983
