944 no worky!

Right, I am appealing to everyone's database of problems as I can't figure this one out.

Basically my wife took her 1982 944 (2500cc) to work and upon coming back to the car park to come home the car wouldn't start.
I did a bit of poking and determined no spark from the coil.
green flag man came out and brought her home.

We purchased a new coil for £50, fitted and no different. Still not starting.
Still no spark from the main ht lead.

Tried 3 coils now and 3 different leads all to no avail. Still will not start.
Tested the circuit with a multimeter and confirmed 12v either side of the coil with ignition on but still no worky!

I can't figure this one out at all, and don't have immediate access to a haynes manual.

Has anyone had a similar problem and know of a simple fix. I can't see this being too griefy!!!

Probably crank or cam sensor. Andy (Hairyarse) had a similar problem a little while back.

Have a look through this thread to see if any of it helps. My money's on the crank/cam sensors though!

Could be the dreaded DME relay or one of the flywheel sensors.

Just been out and tested the rev counter.

No bounce when turning over, so it looks like it's a sensor.

Mine's doing exactly the same. Doesn't start unless the speed sensor is given a prod then the rev counter will bounce and the car fires up.

Got a new speed sensor on its way which should solve it, already replaced the crank sensor which died about a week before.

Is it worth checking the dme relay first?
Where is this located in an '82 944 ??

above the fuses behind the bonnet release lever in the passenger footwell.Can't remember exactly which one it is but it's in the owner's manual.

Passenger side footwell underneath the dash. You;ll see the fusebox. Always a good idea to carry a spare one of these. Latest versions have a 993 number rather than a 944 one.

Yeah I looked at the relay block. All are described in the owners manual but no mention of 'dme'

I assume it will be the one described as 'fuel pump'?

Thats the one - if you have some spade clips and a bit of cable to hand you can rig up a 3 way cable to bypass it (see Clarkes Garage for details) to prove the point before you fork out for a new one....... just don't leave the cable in all the time as it permanent wires the fuel pump to the battery []
