944 Lights

Apart from cleaning them thoroughly ! the simplest thing is to put a quality uprated (but legal) bulb in. Now you will get dozens of different reconendations and disagreements re which ones ! I fit uprated bulbs to all my cars ( currently 4) and have for years and ill start by recomending Osram nightbreaker pkus for performance versus cost. You will be shocked how they change your 944 'night vision' Mas

Ok, I found the switch and they pop up, but not sure they actually do anything !

Was out last night down country lanes and the lights on my push bike are more effective and I am not joking !

Any pointers on improving the light output ? new candles, different kind of lamp oil ??

What Mas says ! The lenses do get covered in a lot of crud in the down position so a good clean can work wonders. Other than that zi would recommend a bulb change too, plenty of them to choose from. I did this on my last 944 and it made a huge difference. Daftly have never got round to it in my current one so really must do it as the nights are drawing in !

Anyone remember when we did the ' 944 invasion' of the essex pcgb meet ? It was the first time id driven my black turbo in the dark and i thought i might die on the way there !, i nearly turned round and gave up. That was the last time i ever used standard bulbs [:D]

Direct wiring will make a massive difference too. Even decent Nightbreaker bulbs wont make a great deal of light with only eight volts behind them. Simon

Yes indeed ! We really should organise another 944 invasion of a regional meet ! My most unnerving light related incident was in my Zermatt ' 85 Turbo which developed the fault that occasionally when you flicked the stalk to engage full beam ALL the lights went out ! Certainly an "interesting" experience whenever it happened which was usually while making spirited progress down a dark and twisty B road....

i fitted this, it makes a difference; http://www.rennbay.com/944-headlight-relay-harness-p-111.html one relay did start to chatter with sidelights on - i blame the dim-dip setup on my car, so also did this mod; http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=606203 now im happy with my lights :)

Fitted Osram Nightbreakers in my S2 years ago and the difference was amazing so now both my kids run them in their cars and are also very pleased, no higher wattage than standard so no issues with overheating, you could also either replace the light units as the reflectors go off or even polish the lenses to remove the years of stone chips.

ORIGINAL: bumperblue Simon, Excuse my ignorance but what is "direct wiring" is it a DIY job. Ian
Hello Ian. 924s - 968s all route the headlamps current though their main headlamp switch. All of the cars are old now and some are very old so the wiring isnt great. It wasnt ever the best way of controlling the lights either, as it causes the headlamp switch to overheat, but I believe that they inherited it from Volkswagen. When you wire the lights directly you add a relay and use what was the main headlamp power cable to provide the very low switching current, and then wire the headlamps directly to a fused positive terminal (they sually say a free terminal on the fuse box, but Im not sure that such a thing exists, Id be tempted to wire a small automotive fusebox directly to the positive terminal on the battery). The headlpamps will now be powered by a short length of new wiring directly from the battery and the increase in brightness should be extremely impressive. As someone else mentioned, replacing the twenty year old sandblasted headlamps will help too, but thats not a cheap option on 1988> cars. Simon
