944-late wheels onto early car?

Guys

My 85 square dash 944 has cookie cutters with decent tyres. Once they are worn out, I can't resist the lure of some modern Boxster or 911 alloys-not too big, maybe 16 / 17" ? I know that I will need spacers, but just wondered if someone could clarify:

1. Do I need spacers front AND Rear-if so, what size?

2. When fitting spacers to the back, do the factory spacers come off first?

3. What is the best wheel size for regular use? Im looking for grip and comfort!

Next question-best place to buy 30mm spacers for front and rear? (I take it they are all the same?)
 
I was in the chip shop!

They are available from most Porsche specialists, but they aren't cheap and I wouldn't want to use "no name" bits , they are quite highly stressed !

They do turn up on eBay too.

Also I think you would need to retain the original rear spacers
 
Keep the original rears and buy a second set along with the long studs and fit them to the front - theyre worth pennies and theyll save you a lot. For the rears you need hubcentric spacers which have their own studs. Technically you need 30mm (approx) but in practice you may need 10mm-20mm wider depending on the wheel width and its offset. The notional 30mm figure applies strictly if youre fitting later telephone dials, which have an offset of 52.3mm

Or get a set of period looking wheels like Fuchs. I bought a nice set of deep dish 16 inch Rials in early offset for my 911 which is pretty much the same offset as the early 944s (ET18, ET23) . They look the business, Boxster wheels, Twists, etc just look crap on the early cars in my opinion! 944s don't suit 17 inch wheels and they ruin the drive in them as well. Try a car before you get them is what I would advise, i have known many people go from 16s to 17s and then back to 16s againdue to the difference in ride, tramlining, etc

Yes, they look totally crap, I agree. Another good option would be the 23mm offset 1986 model year telephone dials.
