944 front screen

Ok, Ok, get the laughing over with! I'm new-ish to these cars and whilst adjusting the bonnet because it was slightly off-centre [ i had removed it to repaint it last week and put a thick bit of carpet over the windscreen at the bottom corners because it looked to me that the bonnet corners could easily slip and crunch the bottom of the screen] I forgot to deploy the carpet, adjusted the bonnet too much [ it was sticking up on the driver's side] and after re-tightening it I opened it up and crunched the very bottom edge!
So, I now have 2 hairline cracks about 20cms long! One across the bottom and one up the side, both are about 3 cms from the outer edge.
So 2 questions, where do I get a replacement and is it an easy job removing and refitting or are they bonded in? Thanks

Hi Maurice,

Moved to the main 944 forum for you. Is it an early or late car, as the windscreens are different?

This is surprisingly common, usually caused by pushing the bonnet too far up when putting new struts on! [&o]

Theyre bonded in. Dont be put off by the comedy prices quoted (£2,000 isnt uncommon) by Auto Windscreens et al - the dearest screen doesnt cost 1/4 of that from Porsche.

HI, thanks, it's a 1989 LUX. Having seen rear screens on ebay for £30-45 I was hoping the front would be about the same?

just ring your insurance company, typical cost is £75 excess for windscreens supplied and fitted these days.

You can even book the whole thing through the autoglass website. https://www.autoglass.co.uk

If you don't want to go down the insurance route then you can pick up screen for not alot of cash from guys like Elliot "porka parts" .I got one from a breaker for £50 cause mine was cracked and had to be removed in order to paint the car.The screen is bonded in and you have to cut the old one out.Clean all the excess sealer off of the winscreen surround and re-seal fit the new windscreen. It's not hard to do,

Bad luck,
one thing though, when the old screen is cut out, there will be knife marks through the paint in the windscreen recess, the fitter cannot avoid this, but it will lead to rust later if not sorted.
For that reason I tend to get them to come and fit at home as I can prep up the recess properly, I just use a 1" brush for paintwork as it cannot be seen and does a better protection job than a spray gun.
mask off the screen opening totally.... if you do this[8|]

I must admit I've never had that problem before. I don't leave knive marks on the paintwork if I cut out a bonded screen. But then maybe vecausae vI take my time and don't just hack it out like most windscreen fitters would. As I haver infinately more time to do the job than a fitter would.

If it is a bonded screen remove the A Pillar trims as the fitter with his cheese wire can also damage this if not careful []

Use a long blade razor or stanley type knive and not cheese wire as that will damage the paint. And remove the A pillar trims and the trim across the top of the window.

I picked up a 2nd-hand front screen off ebay for £90 for my track car, and fitting cost me £60 from a local independent windscreen fitter - so £150 all in.

Regards

Mick
